I know that depleted uranium makes for a wicked bullet, but can you explain why? Is it explosive or something? I've always wondered about that.
Can we discuss how cool A10's are?

I think it has twice the density of lead or somthing pretty darn high. Wich means basically if you had a piece of lead a piece of DU the same size would be twice as heavy. The heavier bullet has more momentum making it more effective at penetrating armor (tanks).Originally posted by jpdgasI know that depleted uranium makes for a wicked bullet, but can you explain why? i think your right, someone in some spyder forums were going to make hammer's out of du coated in something.

DU is VERY dense stuff.
Another property is that it is pyrophoric. Upon impacting the target, the DU gets very hot. If the high speed impact isn't scary enough for the target, it will blow it away with immense heat.

When I was little I did a model of an A10. I thought, wow all those upcoming stealth, mach capable, and sleek warplanes just don't look as cool as a huge, two engine in the tail with a gun the size of a car plane like an A10. I
the A10.

They are only the coolest piece of American whoop *** we got.
I think it was the history channel that said it killed alot of people without even hitting them.
That the vulcan cannon put out so many rounds it gave enemy combatants heart-attacks.Fall Seven Times Stand Up Eight.

I have always loved the a-10. They are just such beasts, like vf-xx said they can take more abuse than any other plane, make an attack run and fly home with half a wing. And the cannon is pretty nifty as well. Wouldn't mind one of those for mounting on my car....nobody honks at me...Comment

The reason a long burst can stall the plane is that the left over propellant that is produced from the cannon will be sucked into and stall the turbines causing the plane to lose power and eventually stall.Lifes a garden dig it!Comment

These is some wierd figure regarding GAU cannon i read on the internet, im not exactly sure but, it is said a 10 second burst from the GAU creates enough recoil to match the amount of thrust both engines can provides in cruise.

It's an awesome aircraft, and I wish they were making more. SFAIK, all the current aircraft date from the early 70's, as teh design was done in the late 60's.
I heard about the proposal to phase them out and replace them in the CAS role with modified F-16s, and I thought it was the stupidest thing ever. The F-16 is a paper target compared to the A-10, for battlefield survivability. Less armour, less armament, less dwell time.

yeah, the F-16 is a joke as a ground attack aircraft compared to the A-10, but the military's into this "multi-role" crap with everything nowadays. They dont like anything thats dedicated to one specific role.
People in the pentagon have also been arguing for the phasing out of the M1 Abrahms, and all MBT's, in favor of a lighter "multi-role" armored vehicle for a few years now. Dont know if that will happen anytime in the next few years though.
Can you imagine that? A US military without those dedicated, purebred killers in our arsenal, just a bunch of "flexible", aka passable, substitutes..........blah

Ya and make the mistake that we did with the Shermans in WWII? We'd be fools to do it. Especially considering that the M1's are not only fast, but accurate.Originally posted by Konigballeryeah, the F-16 is a joke as a ground attack aircraft compared to the A-10, but the military's into this "multi-role" crap with everything nowadays. For those that saw the History channel program on the A-10, am I the only one that thought that gal that was an A-10 driver was hot?
As for the engines, they are turbo-fans, as Blennidae said "Airliner" engines, thus they are relatively quiet.
What really kicks about this plane is the fact that it can take flak all day long from ground fire and the pilot won't even know it. The fuel tank is designed to reseal itself if it takes stuff like 7.62 and I think even a bit larger.
Speaking of plane durability, there was an incident where two F-15's collided and the one lost one of its wings. The pilot got the plane on the ground and the airbase called Lockheed to have them come look at the plane. They told them "There is no way that plane lost its wing in flight and landed safely." The pilots attested to it so Lockheed did some tests. Come to find out the F-15 is aerodynamically stable and can fly without any wings.... Gotta love that Pratt F-100. It's all about power to weight-ratio.Comment

Also, I like how the gun is offset from center
I remember hearing/reading something like that if the gun was centered it would ruin the frame. Something like that.Last edited by Halliday; 10-13-2004, 12:39 AM.Comment
