Well I guess it's out, gonna go pick it up after work. Just wondering if anyone has played through it yet. 3rd kinda burned me out, but I'm hoping this will bring me back for a while.

I played at the tail end of 2nd edition and the begining of 3rd. And when 3rd came out, I thought they simplified the game wayyyyyy too much. From what Ive heard, 4th has made it even simpler.Comment

Now I don't play Warhamster but I imagine part of that is having to compete with Wizkids and Wizards. What with all the click base games and the prepainted collectable games coming out now, eh, I dunno.
On the other hand, there's something to be said about painting your own mini's. Heck I collect and paint Heavy Gear and C.A.V. just cause they look cool...

4th Edition is just as crappy and boring and 3rd edition.
To fix 40k, they need to make it less boring. It needs to not be "Ok, you move everything, and then I move everything". There are much better systems out there.
My brother and I hadn't played 40k in about a year, and we decided to test out 4th edition to see if it was any better, so we borrowed the rulebook from his work (he works at a comics & gaming store) and threw together some 1500 pt. armies.
We didn't get past the third round before we said "Yep, still sucks" and packed it all up.
I'm seriously considering selling my IG army. They need to totally redesign the game system and I just don't see it happening.

Well, I read through it last night. It's 3rd edition with some rule "tweaks" and all the chapter approved stuff included so you only need one book. It's a cleaned up 3rd edition. The main changes I've noticed so far seem designed to take some of the cheese out of the game.
1st is no more screening. You no longer have to shoot at the closest target. All a unit has to do now is pass a LD test and you can fire at a different target.
The Assault system is a little different too, now everyone within 2 inches of a model fights with full attacks. I like this one.
Rapid fire weapons can shoot twice up to 12" and still move.
No direct charging out of (most enclosed vehilces).
There's some others, but that's what I've noticed so far.
I'm going to see how Rogue Trader style armies feel before I decide. I haven't played in about 3 years, so I'm hoping it'll feel fresh.
They do. It'll happen in a few years tho, no sense doing it now if they can eek out a few more years out of this system. I'm glad to see 4th, 3rd burned me out and I started playing Warhammer instead. 2nd was just ridiculous. 1st was fun because it was still new.Originally posted by ThordicThey need to totally redesign the game system and I just don't see it happening.Comment

I remember that game.
Me and my friends were really into it, except we never actually played. We couldn't afford to buy enough models because they're so expensive."What we have to accomplish at this time is all the more clear: relentless criticism of all existing conditions, relentless in the sense that the criticism is not afraid of its findings and just as little afraid of the conflict with the powers that be."
