I was looking at my friends motor recently and noticed that he had an oxygen sensor built into his headers. I commented that I didn't have an oxygen sensor anywhere along my trucks exhaust system and he said that if I put moth balls in my gas tank it would be simmilar to adding NOS in the sense that you would get instant hp increase. I know it wouldnt give as much hp as NOS but it still might be fun to try. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this or heard of doing this. If so could tell me what happened also the +- of doing it. The reason that my truck dosnt have one is beacuse its so old. Its a 79 toyota pickup. It dosnt even have a catylitic conveter. Today I cleaned the carb and put a new air filter. I got me thinking about those moth balls. Any help would be appercitated
Moth Balls and NOS

I would definetly not try it, for one moth balls would clog up your fuel pipes, thats if they dont ruin your engine.
NOS (known to more technical people as nitrous) is fine for short durations with built-up blocks, but it can easily destroy an engine.
Look at it this way, if moth balls worked so well, wouldnt most racers use them? -
Who cares about nos. Turbo it!

NOS
ok this is kinda off your subject but doesn't NOS stand for Nitrous Oxide Systems, a company that makes nitrous bottles and accessories? i just don't understand why everyone calls any nitrous system NOS. if there is a good explanation for this i would like to hear it. i'm not trying to be cocky or anything this is just a little thing that peeves me when i hear it.Comment

Re: NOS
You are right that is what NOS stands for, the reason people use it as a catch all is for many years they were the only company making the kits, only fairly recently have others come around.Originally posted by paintballer187

To the guy who said that you need a built up block to run nitrous with built up blocks, that is a myth like 'cockers shoot farther, and open bolts stink. It was true in the beginning when fuel/air mixtures were controled by carbs, but since fuel injection had gotten better as well as adjusting the programing of the compter it isn't nearly as much of a problem. A stock Civic engine will take a 50 shot or so with out a problem. This is of course assuming it is installed correctly, anything can ruin a car if it is installed by an idiot.2003 SuperBowl Champions!, THE New England Patriots!

Calling nitrous oxide NOS is just using the name of a company that is associated with nitrous oxide. Does it peeve you when people call tissues Kleenex? Its the same thing. NOS just sounds cool as well. You can say "my car has nitrous oxide!" or you can say "my car has NOS!" It sounds better in my opinion. After i posted i did a search on the internet and found a site with dayly tips on it and one of them was to put moth balls in your gas tank. It said to put 5 per gallon. I had no idea that it would be that much. It also said to put an ounce per gallon of WD-40 which will take out the water from gasoline.
Oh yeah Foo I know u were just joking but to "just turbo it" would cost me two grand and you do have to build up your engine but that dosnt matter i wasnt talking about NOS or turbo I was talking about $1.99 moth balls.Last edited by adam68c; 01-02-2002, 11:13 PM.Comment

Turbo it!
Seriously, does anything sound more wimpy than the word "turbo"?
You can run a low 7 second 1/4 mile without NOS. Most people that want NOS anyway are people that know nothing about cars, and thats the only term that they know about cars besides turbo. Hell, half of it was caused by that really really bad movie....I forget what it was called.Comment

No, and engine without NOS can yield a 7 second 1/4. It's a blown 540, gets 1000+ hp. It's in a chop top '48 Chevy pickup.Originally posted by SUN WARRIOR
adding nitrous to what engine will yield a 7 second 1/4?? What ever it is, it'll have to have enormous drag slicks and a parachute.Comment

Anyone ever heard of the escudo pikes peak version? 800+hp and lighter than a miata...
