Changine a hard drive and reusing a dell OS

If I take out the hard drive that windows is on can I use the copy of XP on the dell CD or would I have to buy a new copy?
I want to slowly upgrade my computer and want to know just how far I can go before it won't take the dell OS anymore.
I want to do new hard drives fairly soon, new video card in the near future, then a board and processor probably in a year or so (need more than 1024MB but cannot afford to get the stuff I want right now).

you can't really up grade in that order, usually dell mobos arn't very compatable with after market video cards. so i would get a new mobo and processor first.
who ever said "its not whether you win or lose..." probably lost.

If it's one of those recovery discs, it usually looks at the mobo to see if you can use it. If not, I think it's up to 8 things you can change before you have to call M$.

Yeah it's a recovery disk, so I guess that would require a new operating system.
Right now it has the cheapest GeForce4 you can buy in it but it is in an AGP slot. I still cannot just pop that out, put another in, install drivers and be on my way? It doesn't have onboard video and never did so I don't think their is any need to scew with jumpers, switchs, or any of that fun stuff.
