I really hate spyware...

Ok, I got a nasty case of spyware on my work PC.

First, there was this particularly nasty bit called eZula. That took a few rounds with Ad-Aware SE and some registry editing, but its finally gone.

But now I'm still getting popups. I can't find any running processes to explain it.

Out of the blue, my browser will point to a cgi-bin on www.ad-w-a-r-e.com (they arent even being sneaky with that one), and then it'll redirect me to some random site selling crap I don't want.

I can't find anything to delete that will stop this.

For the record, I can't installed SpyWare Search & Destroy at work, it won't install without admin priveledges.

    Any ideas?

stinger is great and free. Type in google and download. Will destroy most things, and tell you what it was, where it was, that sort of thing.

Make sure you have your browser set to block pop-ups. Then, get someone from IT to load SpyBot Search & Destroy.

Go to this site to find IE parasites and a list of most of the scanners.

sorry to say but IMHO but with the free programs you wasted your $$. Just d-load ad-aware, spy bot search & destroy and spywareblaster and your set. Their all free. Though adaware has a 'pro' version that you pay for but spybot covers everything.

Thing with spybot that some people may not know is you need to enable advance mode then left panel click tools and enable 'host files' and then up near top click 'add spybot host's list'. this will also help prevent going to webpages that gives you the nasty. There are some other cool options in there too. Also don't forget to do the 'imunize' function

I've noticed that ad-aware catches stuff thet spybot doesn't and vice versa. Really need to run them both and keep spywareblaster updated to.

I forgot to mention this program to see what starts up.

                    Free program to manage Autorun.

You also need to come up with a multi-vector defense strategy after you clean up or else it will happen again. The same goes for viruses.

                    Long read.

For the stuff that seems to always come back no matter what you run (spybot sd, ad-aware, etc), try CWShredder AND HiJackThis from here. A lot of times a Browser Helper Object (BHO) will get installed without you knowing. Not all BHO's are bad, but if you get a bad one you will wish they never existed.

These programs I am recommending will let you mess up your system, so be careful. When in doubt, find a spyware forum and ask questions before using it to remove something.

And, finally, if you haven't already done so, (assuming windows os and internet explorer) do a Windows update. Keep updating until no more critical updates are recommended. This step won't get rid of any pre-existing problems, but it can help in preventing your system from getting re-infected.

                        - coopy

Don't you have a computer tech or something at your work. Just tell them.
