well for the most part konig your right the majority of my class thinks civil war was just slaveyr. Althought I think that is just kids being ignorant. My history teacher also taught us other reasons the war happened, but I can't remember now.


Is the KKK visible in the south? like do you know the KKK is around and hear about them?

I've grown up in Tennessee, and lived in Georgia the past five years, and I've never once seen actual KKK members or known anyone who was one. Now I've only lived in one small part of either one of those states so I could'nt say that there are no KKK in them, but I've never seen a trace of them.

I've only ever seen the KKK on TV shows or in history books. From my understanding, they've about dried up their membership completely, maybe only 2000-3000 'actual' members. I read that they had fallen so far down that they have to merge forces with more "popular" hate groups like skinheads.

I have met plenty of trashy, racist rednecks though, but I suspect they have a "yankee equivelent" in the north as well, minus the rebel flags of course. I have also encountered a surprising number of "rednecks" from Ohio, complete with rebel flags, wich is a mystery to me

My yankee friends say that in the north they teach the war's main cause as a "fight against slavery", I can say that for the most part I was taught that the war's main cause was a "fight for states' rights". Of course those reasons are both far to simplistic, but you can see how perspectives change depending on were you are taught.

Thats what they teach you up untill high school when you learn that slavery was outlawed in most of the south after the war began along with a bunch of other interesting facts.

I propose dividing MI into two states - one being the money draining Detroit :) and the other being West MI - the rest of you can go whichever way you want, we'll keep the UP.

West MI is awesome... you get the lake, fresh water, seasons. Mind you the seasons are winter and road construction, but still. And you have more casinos than any other state except Nevada. You also have some of the highest paid teachers in the nation, and they tend to be good at least around where I live. We define summer as three months of bad snow skiing.

Supposedly there was a yearly KKK rally about 10 miles from my house in a small community called Greenwood. I've never actually seen the rally, but almost anyone you talk to around this area knows where it was held. I've heard its really pathetic (which goes without saying) and small. From what people say its more of a white trash party, not a big event with media exposure ect. So all this to say, I guess the KKK isn't really that visible around here and I live as far south in Alabama as you can go :)
