Win XP: Can I turn the 'previews' off?

I hate how windows XP trys to make a preview out of the icons for every file, I open a folder and it my computer will go crazy trying to load everything. I just want a normal icon for everything, not a damned preview. I try changing the icon the normal way, but it will stay on the changed icon for a second, then switch back to the preview.

    This is what I mean:
See, I want everything to stay as the BS icon, not slowing down my computer and making me wait 5 seconds before I can do anything.
