Comcast Cable Internet Question

I have an existing cable outlet (for the TV) that I want to attach a splitter to and then connect a Motorola cable modem to the splitter. My question is this: Do I need to contact my cable company (Comcast) in order to get Internet from my existing cable outlet and the splitter/cable modem combination, or can I just hook up the splitter/modem and get the Internet to work? If you haven't figured it out, I'm trying to avoid the monthly charges for cable Internet if at all possible. Thanks for the help.

You aren't going to be able to do that, seeing as how every ISP uses a DHCP client to issue IP-addresses based off of the mac addresses of their known modems. In regular English that means...the cable company keeps track of the cable modems they give out by their mac address (each cable modem has its own unique one, and every other network device for that matter), and will just not assign you an IP address so you won't get connectivity.

once they connect your house to the internet line, you can put a splitter goint between the modem and the t.v., i do it, but again, they have to connect your line to the internet first.

nope tried it and it doesnt work. just pay the MAN and you'll be happy with the high speed cabel

read my post more carefully... i said "when they connect it" meaning when comcast hooks up the internet line to your house, you can use a splitter. (yes, you have to pay for it)

Can_ opener has it right. Your gonna have to pay for it. You might be able to avoid paying modem rental, if you have one, that is compatible with the system.
