Air National Guard Pilot Strafes School in Jersey

Note to self: Dont send kids to school in New Jersey

Jet Fires at N.J. School During Training

    By WAYNE PARRY
    Associated Press Writer

LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J. (AP) -- The target was an object on the ground well within the confines of the Warren Grove firing range, a 2,400-acre scrub pine expanse used by the military to train pilots in bombing and strafing.

But when the heavy gun in the left wing of an Air National Guard F-16 fighter jet fired Wednesday night, it sent 25 rounds of 20mm ammunition smashing through the roof and zinging off the asphalt parking lot of the Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School 3 1/2 miles from the range.

At least eight of the 2-inch-long lead rounds punched their way into classrooms, Police Chief Mark Siino said.

A custodian was the only person in the school at the time, and no one was injured. The school will reopen Monday after damage is repaired, education officials said.

Military investigators are trying to determine how the strike could have happened.

The projectiles, which do not explode, were meant for a ground target 3 1/2 miles away, said Col. Brian Webster, commander of the 177th Fighter Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard, which is responsible for the range.

Webster said he did not know why the gun fired.

The single-seat jet was flying at 7,000 feet at the time. It was assigned to the 113th Wing of the District of Columbia Air National Guard, based at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland and returned there after the shots were fired, a Guard spokesman said.

Military officials would not identify the pilot. Operations were suspended at the firing range pending completion of the investigation.

"The National Guard takes this situation very seriously," said Lt. Col. Roberta Niedt, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. "The safety of our people and the surrounding communities are our foremost concern."

Mike Dupuis, president of the township's Board of Education, said school workers are mindful that the firing range is nearby.

"That's always in the back of our minds. It is very scary. I have children in that school and relatives that work there," he said.

The Warren Grove range, about 30 miles north of Atlantic City, has been used by the military since the end of World War II, long before the surrounding area was developed.

In 2002, an Air National Guard F-16 that had been practicing at the range crashed along the Garden State Parkway. The plane's pilot ejected safely, and no one on the ground was hurt.

Errant practice bombs were blamed for forest fires that burned more than 11,000 acres of the Pine Barrens near the range in 1999 and more than 1,600 acres in 2002.

Ugh, more crap happens in Jersey.
It's a good thing that the NJEA convention is this week. The teachers are in atlantic city, and the students at home. They could have had an event going on then, or something.

                  18 seconds.

Distance from the target range to the school at those speeds.

Whoever built the school there has explaining to do. The range was there first.

Also, the pilot was wearing night vision goggles, which severely limit depth of field.

Not trying to take blame away, but just throwing some good facts out there.

ok first off, the pilot was mistaken, no 2 doubts about it.

Being a pilot, i can understand how he made the mistake, also putting any thing near an MOA or an airport, and getting complaints from it is bull crap.

The pilot should have been able to tell where the range was and where it ended though, the fact that he flew out of the MOA was also a bad thing on his part, unless it is sourrounded by a restricted area, which if it was sourrounded by a restricted area, there would be no school there. Airspace's are *****es, il say that.

Also, the pilot would not (or atleast should not) be wearing night vision gogles, he would be using the infared screen provided for him for use during night opperations.

Where I went to college, Klamath Falls, OR, they have one of the two F-15 training stations in the U.S. The other being in Florida.

Basically about every other day walking to class I'd see a pair of F-15's flying in formation over the school and if you were down in town you'd see them pretty close with their landing gear down since the base was just outside of town. The college has ties with the military because the original location of the school was a Marine base from WWII a couple miles from the existing location. When they built the existing campus back in the late 50's they built the dorms exactly the same as a three story military barrack. It still stands today and I lived in it for four years.

Supposedly, because of the shape of the dorms being the same as barracks, it was convenient for the F-15 pilots to lock onto it on their way back from a training mission outside of town. Mind you, none of these planes ever carried armaments, but they would still lock onto it for training their "bombing" skills. Of course it was all hearsay and noone could confirm or deny it, but given the circumstances it didn't seem too far-fetched.
