I would like to read the Hobbit as I have only seen the cartoon from the early 80's. The movie was great. Although, I didn't like how they went into the second book at the end of this first movie. I had a friend who saw it and hadn't started the second book yet, so he was a little perturbed about that. Otherwise it's a great movie.Comment

If you're talking about he part with Bormir, they went into the second book as to not leave Bormir as a bad guy. I thought it was a good move. If they had left off his redemption for a year it would have taken away from the significance of it.
As noted before the triology was originally written as one book and forced to be seperated. So I have no problem with where they end each movie.Comment

remember back in the time newline announced they were going to make the movie, and there were rumors that they might just make 2 movies instead of three. i cant even imagine now how they would have done that.Comment

Saw it, loved it. Was great because I think I was the only one in the theater that knew there wasn't an ending (my girlfiend was pissed cause I didn't fill her in) just finished The Two Towers last night and started Return of the King and I have to say that if they(moviegoers) were not happy with the first movie ending abruptly they really won't like the end of the next one.[email protected]

actually if you watch all the documentaries and stuff on the dvd you hear peter jackson talking about pitching the screenplay to newline. he actually proposed it as two movies which he didn't want to do but he didn't think he could get them to agree to three.Originally posted by Restola

My Take (spoilers ahead!)
Read the books too many times to count (In fact, it was the trilogy that was a deciding factor in my majoring in English in college). Thought the FotR (Fellowship of the Ring) was *excellent*, although there were some omissions and changes to move the movie along. I missed Tom Bombadill and a couple of other things from the book, but to have added them would've added another 30 minutes to the movie.
Went to see TTT (The Two Towers) tonight. I went into the movie expecting another tour de force with a few ommissions and changes, like FotR. I expected to "see" the book on the big screen. What I did not expect was, IMO, someone reading the Cliff Notes on The Two Towers and writing a script based on the Cliff Notes. Anyone remember David Lynch's version of Dune from the '80's, with the tacky costumes, bad script and Toto score? Peter Jackson did the same thing with TTT. The 5 minutes of Arwen and Elrond arguing and Aragorn's dream sequence, Aragorn disappearing/getting wounded a couple of times, Merry and Pippin having to trick Treebeard into seeing/attacking Isengard, Faramir's struggle with the Ring, Frodo and Sam's trip to Osgiliath and *all* involved with that sequence (Nazgul!), Gimli providing too much comedic relief, etc, etc, etc. Lots and lots of time wasted in useless film that could have been better spent elsewhere.
As much as I would like to, I cannot recommend this movie to someone that is going to/has read the trilogy. See the first movie, read the second book, and hope that the third movie redeems the trilogy.
