Bartending

Anyone here certified, or have any experience with mixing?

I'm going to be taking my bar tending certification course this weekend. Anyone done it recoomend to do some homework before to try to get a heads up on things?

And what's your experience with working? I plan on opening my own bar eventually, but I think I'll get a second job bartending this summer for fun.

Can you even attend bartending school if you are under 21? If so it sounds like fun. My bartending experience is limited to mixing drinks from this big book I have that list all the popular drinks and how to mix them.

Yea, 18 in most states, Maine it's 17.

Kinda funny though.. I was working with some hot 17 year old girl at a bar (I was the cook), she's serving getting all these tips from older guys. I got a split of the tips, I got 30, she got like 100 that night. It was nice.

If you're hot, and a girl, you can make mad money as a bartender lol.

Here in MA you have to be 18 to serve. Most places want you to be 21 though.

Just dont become an alcoholic! I have seen a few friends go off the deep end due to constantly being in that sort of environment.

Heh.. all my freinds think that will happen to me... I'll try hard not to though.

But I'm gonna try to land a job on the bar here. (Yes we have a bar on campus, but like no one goes to it heh)

I'm pretty sure you have to be 21 in Georgia to serve. If remeber correctly all my friends that worked at reastraunts could take orders for alcohol but couldn't physically give it to them. And I know what you mean about hot chicks making mad tip money, some of my more attractive lady friends will make more tip money in a few nights than I make in two weeks

As for homework try to remember the types of alcohol. Not just the brands but type, tequila, rum, vodka etc. Once you get that making simple drinks is easy.

its 18 here in iowa and i am currently a bartender...deffinately know your liquers is the big thing. start learning names of stuff and what goes in what kind of glass. figure out what kind of drinks are popular in your area, here i make tons of long island ice teas, margaritas, daquiris, sex on the beach, and tons of like jack and cokes and that kind of stuff.

Trust me, I'll know the names of liquor . But a name of a mix and what to do is all I really need to learn... that pretty much goes for everyone. I've been reading up on it online, so I got a few down.

From my experience most places want to see bartending experience more than a course. You may have to spend sometime barbacking somewhere before you can actually serve any drinks. Not to be mean, but realisticly just because you know what goes in a drink doesn't mean you can be a bartender. The experience of working give one a fair amount of insight that a controled environment like a class cannot duplicate. This is not to say you won't get a job but rather to prepare you for what might happen. Either way good luck and remember be quick with a joke and a light of their smoke and money in your tip jar there will be.
