My computer, a Dell purchased for school this year, freezes often and when it does, windows task manager freezes as well, so I have to restart via turning it off with the power button. Needless to say, this kills me everytime I'm forced to do it. I have auto updates on and did NOT install SP2.

i would install service pak 2, and how come u didnt intall it in the first place? u have enough processing power and ram to run supperb. after u install all updates, maybe u want to check if any adware/ spyware is on your comp. go to www.lavasoftusa.com and dl adaware SE. and maybe u want to find and dl spybot search and destroy to block more adaware on the comp since these freeware programs dont always find spyware or adware. Run both and go from there i guess.
just edit the link.

And another thing, if u did what i said, and u still have problems, it might of been a good idea that u should of installed service pak 2 when u had the chance to at another time. cause windows had a flaw in there system pre service p. 2 , which was no good and was easy to hack comps and put viruses in. i got a couple.
so if it still has problems after u dl the programs and run them, i would go buy norton anti virus and that could fix it, or just buy it now and that would be a great start.

install all the service packs, then run:
Norton Antivirus
Spybot Search & Destroy
Ad-Aware.
This should clean it up.

BTW, it might be a hardware issue if it hard freezes like that, often. Call dell customer support.. Comment

Yea, I had a bad feeling it may have been hardware.
Most times its rock solid...I already have spybot and adaware installed. I use avast antivirus, since norton is awful. I originally tought norton may have been the culprit.
Weird thing is is that the initial freeze that, in turn freezes windows task manager, comes form different programs.Comment
