About working out, who can i talk to on AO?

I've been wanting to do lower body excersises to run faster, and was wondering what are some good excercises to build lower body muscles?

    running

i promise you, the only way to run faster is to run more

take it from someone who has run competetively for three of the last six years and run all six of them. running is theonly way to do it. sure, a LITTLE upper body lifting will help your endurance, but you don't want to lift with your legs to run faster

yeah, like Kev said...just run...i've been doing track for years now and it's the best way. Just keep running and building on the distance/speed that you do it at

You'll need some upper body strength/speed also, the arms and legs work together and somewhat limit how fast each other can go. Ever try running without using arms? Also if you want to work on only speed, try to keep longer distance running minimal, the longer you can run usually means the less fast twitch muscle fibres you have (you want more fast twitch to run sprints). It IS possible to change the composition of your muscle, ie. depending on your needs to gain more fast or slow twitch muscle fibres.

for added affect, you might wanna try running in a pool so that the water gives you resistance. but like everyone else said, to run faster, you have to run more. alone with that though, make sure you warm up before doing any exercises. this also applys to playing paintball. i warm up for atleast 5 minuts of stretches followed by about 2 minutes of jumping around and getting my heart beat going and getting psyched up for the game.

AS someone who trains people to run this is all very good advise. Good job guys!
I would add that Interval runs are VERY good at increasing your speed AND endurance. Pick a distance (start short and then build) and run at an average pace. During this run at Intervals sprint for a pre-determined distance. For instance, when I do this, I do 3 miles and sprint between every other light pole along my route.
Plyometric exercises are very good for building that fast twich muscle fiber. Exagerated skips, repeated standing long jumps, are just two plyos. Do a search for plyometrics (sp?) on google and seei f that gets you some more.

            Good Luck!

I was told by my physcian that stair climbing is one of the best. This may be just for me, I'm not sure, but he told me that running is very bad for the knees and that when compared to walking running provides essentially the same results but with more wear and tear on your joints. I've been doing stair climbing for four years now nad I'm in the best shape I've ever ben in.

While we're talking about fitness, lets talk about what I feel is every bit as important--flexibility, just passive and also dynamic. I'm way too inflexible but it is hard to know how to improve. I need a paintball trainer lol. None of my teammates seem to care about fitness.

                      Flexibility is easy.

Just stretch every morning. Get a good book on stretches or get a personal trainer to a few weeks to help you out.

I do my stretches every morning and now my six year old does too.

My cousin lives in a rather large building here in NY. 30 floros I think. His work out is to climb to the top of the fire stairs then he takes the elevator down.

He does it about 6 - 10 times as a workout.
