    Question about the military

well I'll start from the begining. I've been shooting guns since i was 5yo. The first gun i ever shot was my dads AR-15(with him standing behind me to make sure i dont get pushed over from the recoil). at the age of 7, I was finaly givven my first gun a .117cal. pelet gun (i still have it) and its a great gun the only mods i've done to it is tru-glo sites and a scope(a Daisy 4x15 power) And up till now its been the most accurate 50y range gun we have. At 8yo, I went trap shooting for my first time in my back yard in the newly built trap house. I used my first shot gun a pump action 4-10. Up from then to now I've allways been constantly been shooting. we recently put a scope on our .22 bolt action and i've picked off dimes at 100yards accurately. We are soon buying a dual pur. Scope w/ night vision on our AR-15. So now that i've been shooting every weekend doing longer and longer distances. Now since i'm in AFJROTC i'm allmost positive i want to do sniper for the ARMY. Now I'm wondering if there would be a better service( ARMY, AF, Marines ect...) for me to be a good sniper. Any coments about what service i should do would be nice.

P.S. I have my own Ossama BenLaden head targes

Another considoration i was thinking about was Heilocopter piolit i've allways loved em and my family says i look like someone who would do that kind of thing.

Marine Scout Snipers are renown for having one of the finest sniper training programs in the world. Many snipers in the US special forces have come from the Marine Scout Snipers or have gone through their sniper program. I'm sure you can find alot of info about them and their program online, have a look deadeye

I think it goes without saying that the Marines are the best trained branch of the military. Do you have aspirations to go on some day and try out for a special forces unit i.e. SEALs, Force Recon, DELTA, etc? If so, I think inlisting in the Marines is the best way to approach that goal.

Are your eyes 20/20 uncorrected? Do you have any vision problems whatsoever? If no to the first and yes to the second, then forget about being a pilot of anything in the military. Not trying to shoot you down, just saying you need to know that before you put your mind to being a military pilot.

The Marine Corps would be your best bet for a dedicated sniper position. The Army has an excellent school at Fort Benning, Georgia but its not established as a dedicated position within the Army like the Marines use. Marine Corp snipers are reknowned world wide for their skill. Just remember it takes a lot more than good shooting to be a sniper. It may seem easy to look at someone and take them down with a rifle but its not. It takes a special kind of person to do what they do. If you are that person than God love you. Each branch of the service has a unit or units dedicated to special warfare it just depends on what you really want to do.

Whatever happens I certainly appreciate the desire you have to serve your country. I never got the chance regardless of how much I wanted too.

So you can shoot. The question is, can you hck it inb evrything else that's required. Me, I'm Navy. And I'm reminded of a poster I once saw.

                Navy Seal Training: $200,000.
                BMG50 Sniper Rifle: $45,000.
Having a terrorist in your sites: priceless.

                Whatever you choose, happy whacking.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I don't think you quite know what you are considering. ANYONE can replicate your shooting accomplishments. The gilfriend and I shoot regularly, and can consistently hit targets the size of a human head at various ranges ('course, the girlfriend was taught by the best. No arse kissing there, Army ) Anyhoo, it's not so much the firearms proficiency, it's the fact that you will be ending someone's life. It is one thing to drop a bomb from 20,000 feet. It is another thing entirely to look into look into someone's eyes as you squeeze the trigger.

I realize that you are in JUNIOR ROTC. Junior ROTC is NOTHING like ROTC, and ROTC is NOTHING like the military. Don't get your hopes up.

Marine corp. has the best program.
im already looking back and wondering if i should have joined. i always wanted to be USMC. but decided that going more for the govt agencys offers better options should i be hurt, or get sick. ( ya i know the military has a pension but you gotta be in for a while)

but anyway. if you do decide to enter, the marines will challenge you the most, and will reward you the most cause you know waht they say ,the deadliest weapon in the world is a marine and his rifle.

for some marine corp motivation look up Chesty puller quotes. now thats a soldier and marine.

You should start doing some reading. There are tons of books available about all the different services and the special warfare programs that each has. If the sniper route is something you are considering then do some research into Carlos Hathcock. He was one of the best in the business. Some other books I recommend are two about US Navy SEAL training written by Capt Dick Couch. I can't remember the title of the first one but the second is called "The Finishing SChool." Basically, he follows a class as they go through Navy BUD?S training. Its very intense and incredibly insightful. There are books on every topic you can think of regarding the military. Start reading and get informed. Most of all don't let ANYONE steer you away from what YOU want to do.

look up anything you can about carlos hathcock. he was the best sniper in the world ever, check him out. he has a really good book out too, i forget the name.

remember that sniping isnt all about shooting, its getting to your target, and laying MOTIONLESS for days on end until you got just the right shot. that means you pee your pants, you crap yourself, you dont eat, bugs snakes whatever cannot make you flinch one bit, and so on. of course, thats the extremes right there, but you might find yourself in those positions.
