    Wrestling?

    I'm thinking about doing wrestling at my high school, my friend tells me that I will get: quicker, faster, stronger, more endurance, and that I can gain weight if I get enough protein (i.e.- protein shakes, bars, lotsa high protein foods). What are your thoughts on all this? Is it true, or not really?

    I wrestled, and I loved it. It is just like anything else, you get out of it what you put in. If you bust your hump at it, yeah, you would definately see some benefits, socially, physically, and emotionally.

        Wrestling is one of the largest contributors to male eating disorders in High School students. The stress on "making weight" contributes to this. First, make sure that you do not try to force your body to make a weight class that your coach may tell you to make. Secondly, this time period of your life if when most guys really start to grow, so your weight is going to gradually increase throughout high school in a natural manner.

        To address your high protein questions, eating a diet that is high in protein is not, I repeat *NOT* going to make you "bigger" as far as muscular development is concerned. It is simply going to make you fatter. Protein has many functions in the body, one of the last functions is for rebuilding muscle. What is most important for you is, if you start lifting weights and excercising/having hard practices, is that you eat a balanced diet that gets in plenty of complex carbohydrates, moderate protein, low fat. Going out and buying protein shakes, protein bars, weight gainer, etc. is absolutely useless to your goal and in fact can cause damage to your kidneys and liver.

        We have to understand nutrition to understand why those products are bad for you. The amount of protein most athletes should intake is equal to about .9 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. So first convert your weight to kilograms, then multiply it by .9 to 1.2 to get your number. I would say that .9 X your weight would be fine for you. Anything more is really going to be overkill and unnecessary.1.2 is for a very active athlete, like a college football player with many practices and workouts. But as I said before, do not focus only on protein for muscular development. Carbohydrates are actually more important for this because they supply energy.

        Stick to a whole food bar, such as Chef Jays "Tri-o-plex" bars. They are absolutley the best meal replacement bar out there. However, remember they are just that, a "meal replacement" for when you cannot eat real food. Nothing replaces real food.

          wrestling and pb are the only sports I like

          I love em both ,Its my 2nd yr of wrestling and I have gotten alot stronger and more skilled then I was before. Practices are hard but well worth it , I loose about 2 lb a practice

          Its alot of fun ,

            Hey i have been wrestling for about 7 years i am a freshman in high school right now in michigan.I have won placed and won many national tournments.i have been cutting weight ever scence i was bout 12 i am 15 now.If u r a bigger guy u diffently lose alot more weight and tone up so u look bigger doing this sport.most good wrestlers after high school get some kind of scolor ship to a collage.i am wrestling 112lbs this year and i will have to lose some weight(10)lbs.thats alot for a little guy.mango is right tho its relly hard on the body but if u work at it u can make the rest of your life easy.

            eat like your fruits and veggie,chicken,the
            protine bars just dont cut it when u want

              right I wrestled laast yr. and I am wrestling this year. I went up 25 pounds during the season! I have a friend at 112 and all ha ate for 3 days is 2 tic-tacs and a 1/4 bottle of water.

                I actually just got back from my first wresteling practice this season about 30 minutes ago. Its alot of fun, you wont believe how tired you get wreteling. I weigh about 175 lb. This is my third year wresteling, I started in grade 9, just the high school wresteling. Good luck, have fun.

                    I wrestled for two years. Probably some of the most fun I had, but I got extremely sick of making weight with such a low body fat percentage as it was. That's a big part of why I quit.

                    You'll definitely get GREAT muscular endurance and muscle tone, some more strenth, and you'll be quicker in certain ways (shooting, sprawling, turning out, etc.)

                          Find out what your coach's position is on the use of them, before you bust one out at practice. The captain on my high school team (state ranked every year since his freshman year and 3 tiem state champ) got caught by the coach at a practice, and the coach suspended him from 5 meets. One of which was the county individual tourney (where he was going the be "the one to beat"), and another was a league individual tourney (once again ranked as top in the league). So before you try something like that make sure your coach approves it. Other than that enjoy the sport, it will change you both physically and mentally.
