    Colin Powell Submits Resignation

Being reported on CNN. No story as of yet, just a headline.

I think its a shame. Even though he has his disagreements with the rest of the administration, I think he was doing an excellent job. I can't really say that I blame him, its a tough job, but when you reach those levels of public service you should put the good of the country above your own personal frustrations.

In any case, I wish him good luck in whatever he chooses to do.

Maybe it wasn't totally Powell's idea. At least thats not what the article hints at.

If Bush asked him to resign, hes an idiot.

Actually he had this not been long anticipated? I mean I read at least 6 months ago had been saying he was leaving after the election. No matter what the outcome was. And so I thought it was a done deal. I had heard it reported that he had some aspirations to run for office and that distancing himself for a period of time to disconnect was a good idea. Your chances of appealing to the other side become better if your no longer tainted by the current administration. One would guess this means he may become a candidate for Republican office next time aroud. Even possibly President or VP. And it would be wise to not be a part of the present administration so as to openly critisize it and shape your own image.

I had heard rumors but never that he was planning it for sure.

As for running for office, he has said he doesn't plan on running for president. Maybe he changed his mind, or wants a lesser office?

I wasn't really surprised when I heard the news or anything.

Thought I remembered the same thing, so for me, this wasn't "news", just a matter of time.

I get the impression he is keeping his option open. And this would be a first step to doing that. Maybe even Senate or something but... still would need to distance himself in sufficent time so he is no longer remembered as a part of the previous Admin. I would expect him to be "available" for consultation to the Administration... but privately not publicly.

Condi Rice will be the first black president, not Colin... All in all, a good guy, but I think he's let politics effect way too many of his decisions the last few years...

Can't sayI blame him. I wouldn't want my good name associated with the train wreck that is the Bush Administration. Too bad though. He seemed to be the only one doing a real good job. Probably got tired of butting heads.

If McCain is smart, he'll make Powell is VP!! That would be cool. He'd definitely get my vote then.

What I think is so funny is that we have people in this thread that think he did a great job yet probally cant name what it is he actually did.

Myself and one of the libs in our office were chatting about the cabinet stuff. What you need to understand is that these guys are at the top of thier games. Its a good idea to leave now while your hot and get an easy consulting/speaking gig in the private sector. Also keep in mind that some of these guys have worked thier butts of thier whole life, and would really love to retire. Heck the education guy is 72!

                    Little note on Powell,
What I find most intresting is this guy doesnt form an opinion on anything. He managed to stay out of he fray, now if you ask him what his views are I am sure that he would piss off more libs and certianly those who have posted here.

Or maybe people are paying attention now because something's actually HAPPENING?

EVERY decision is political. How can someone be part of a political administration and not make political decisions?

Unless you think everyone but a select few should just be mindless lap dogs and yes-men.

You know, Powell is one person that I would totally stand behind for President. It's a shame he will never run...

Although i have an extreme disdain for the current administration, i too would vote for Powell if he ran for president. He has always given the impression he would never run, so I dont think he will. But he also said that Iraq wasnt a threat and had no WMDs in 2001 and he changed his tune right quick on that one....so who knows what he might do...
