If you want easy and inexpensive, go with a Trike. Trikes are powered hang-gliders with three point landing gear (hence the Trike name). You steer by shifting weight and geometry, the same as an unpowered kite.
The other route is a powered parachute, but you give up a lot of speed and versatility for a very safe and comfortable ride.
After these, you get into ultra's that begin to resembles actual aircraft, with the price tag going up fast.
Before you buy, check into a local club, they're all over the place now. Get one on one information from owners about flight lessons. Flying is easy as can be....it's the take off and landings that require practiced skills.

And watch out...I know a lot of FAA guys and the ultralights will be watched and inspected by the FAA within 3 years or so. I am also going into the FAA and my teachers are in the FAA so this is legit information.Comment

Do some research. There are a lot available. They range in price from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Then you have a choice, do you want to build from a kit or build from scratch. Scratch takes longer ( a lot longer) but is cheaper. Do you want one or two place? It's better to go with a reliable manufacturer or a plane that has been around for awhile. It's not like a paintball gun. Newer is not always better with ultralights.
Good luck and have fun.
