    Paintball Hobby or Sport

ok a friend(played 5 times) and I(play weekly) have been discussing the fact of paintball a sport or hobby.

fromt the definition in the dictionary
    a sport is

a game in which a person is physically active and often is competing with someone else.

    hobby is

something that a person does regularly in his spare time because he enjoys it

ok this may be pointless but i know this fact is argued quite a bit about our sport. answer what you feal is corect. and of course feedback if ya have any comments please no flames.

It depends on what perspective you take it into,

    Sport:
    You know it
    You love it
    Play all the time
    Tourny player
    Latest gear
    etc.

    Hobby:
    Ocaasional play
Need an airsmith most of the time
    Cheaper gear

It can really go either way

LoL, it's both. Because a Sport is a Hobby. The only time I don't see a sport being a hobby is when its your job, But I guess something can still be a hobby when your getting paid to do it, unless its not fun anymore.
When someone asks you "what are your hobbies?" do you list paintball as one of the hobbies? As long as it's fun and you do it in your spare time its a hobby. Just because something is a hobby doesn't make it less a Sport.

Dax, I have one question for you. Do you play Paintball regularly in your spare time for fun?

actually no. i set aside every saturday as the day to play and practice. its a set aside time just for paintball. spare time is say if your planning to go somewhere at 5 and its only 1 there is spare time where you would do something ie. play computer games, read, listen to music, etc. but if you set aside specific time for something that is not considered spare time.

I dont really consider it a sport when asked for a few reasons....to me a sport is something the school does, basketball team, football, volleyball..those are organized sports. As far as I know, theres no paintball team. To go with that i feel stupid calling paintball a sport because a lot of ppl are set in their ways and some people dont see it as one, i know i dont because im not a big fan of organized sports and jocks.

For me, it's something that I do when I have free time and money. But that almost never happens, and that's why I'm forced to sell all my gear.

For others with that play it alot on a consistent basis, than that would be a sport for them.

In general, I would call paintball a sport. Why? Because it involves teamwork, rules, and people. These are the basics of a sport. Just because it is not a school sport, does not mean that it isn't a sport. There are lots of sports that schools do not participate in.

I am firmly settled that it is a sport but my wife in her infinate annoyance is dead set on considering it as a hobby.

but then again she thinks that figure skating is a sport. shows what she knows.

Actually, the third option was both.
Oh, and it is both, but to different people. The hardcore tourny players would consider it a sport, and the rec/scenario guys would consider it a hobby.

A comment on your post Patriot-

Am I correct that your saying that a sport is something organized (such as school sports)? You don't consider that people who play in tourny's and spend a lot of time are just in it as a hobby? Basically I'm getting at personally in your case it's a hobby though? What are your thoughts about paintball in general then? If I'm wrong please help me understand.

                          Thanks :)

I think that the game itself is a SPORT. When you go out there and play, you are participating in paintball the SPORT.

However, there is also aspect of collecting, upgrading, and tinkering with guns/equipment. That aspect is a HOBBY.

                            So its both.

Law...i was only forced to consider paintball the way i do by others. You see at first i considered paintball a sport, and when i told people i knew at school was mocked for it, claiming its not a sport, all it is, is shooting people and running around. I was told if it was a sport it would have a team at school, so in regards to other people that were around me.its a hobby, to me its a hobby because due to my current financial situation i only play once a month and its in the middle of no where....
