The Pac-10 does not have a conference title game, as a conference must have at least 12 teams to have one... The SEC and Big-12 are the only conferences, to my knowledge, with 12 teams or more... Auburn won their division of the SEC, Tennessee theirs... OU won their division of the Big 12, Colorado won theirs... -
Had USC lost to UCLA it would still have been conference co-champion by number of conference wins tied to California. They would not have played each other to determine it.Originally posted by CliffioOU beat CU for the big 12 title

how does this not make them chapmions SCpolo?
Auburn also won, but, got snubbed, thats just the way it goes i guess, you can argue for each team, i hate OU but im glad to see them in for the big 12.....even tho this year the big 12 was a WEAK conferance.
but here is the real question, why is anyone surprised.....USC and OU have been top to for how long? and USC and OU have been ahead of Auburn in the BCS rankings...
wasnt a surprise, but, what can you do.
Had OU lost to Colorado (yea right) it would still have been the best big 12 team by far as they played a 4-4 team for champion!
Both of these conferences were weaker by far almost top to bottom from the SEC.
Had Tenessee beat Auburn, Auburn would not have been conference champs no matter if they had more conference wins than Tennessee. And it would have. they first had to win thier division and then play each other again if need be in "winner take all" game... thats the difference in how the conferences are and how the champion is decided.
Distinctly different way to become "conference champion". In fact both USC and OU were assured of championships (or at least a share of champion in USC's case) in their respective conferences before they ever played Saturdays games. I mean OU plays a 4-4 team and Auburn was not. And had to play the next best team in a very good conference to get it. The issue is not conference champion. Its who has the best team by playing the best teams and winning.Last edited by cphilip; 12-06-2004, 03:37 PM.Comment

I was wondering why cphillip was describing Aururn vs Tenn as "both champions." Also, the argument that as the SEC winner, Auburn has an advantage is only valid if the conferences are weighed differently (I'm not sure).God....I guess I was probably returning videotapes.Comment

Suprisingly enough the SEC is fairly balanced and they play across divisions to some extent. However its obvious the big 12 is not balanced in anyway from division to division. In fact outside of OU there is little else. Now in this case had USC had to play California again it might could be argued. However UCLA gave em a good run. Auburn and Tennessee played twice this year. Auburn won both times. It varies year to year what cross divisional games make up the regular season.Originally posted by SCpoloRickerUSC clinched Pac Ten even if they lost to UCLA (fat chance, 6 years running now

the big 12 might be, and thats a serious might, weaker than the sec. however, there is no stronger division/conference in the nation than the big 12 south that OU won and played all season in. to even suggest that OU had a weak schedule is silly.
as far as USC goes, well when you are number 1 you have to screw up to lose that. they dont just slot someone over you just because. USC didnt screw up, OU didnt screw up and sadly, auburn didnt screw up. the system is flawed and this is just what happens.
should michigan be in the rose bowl? should texas? what about cal and boise st? what about USC last year? schools get screwed every year, it just happens that its auburns turn this year.Comment

OU 19
AUBURN 53.5
Well, it appears both USC and OU had tougher sch. according to the computer polls. Also, yes the SEC is tough but the BIG 12 south is just as tough if not tougher. There are 5 BIG 12 south teams in the top 25, and do you know who has the toughest SOS in the country? Texas A&M, another big 12 south team. Someone seems to get the shaft every year but you can't say that 2 deserving teams aren't playing for the NC. Although it won't happen and I don't know why, they need to incorporate a playoff system to solve some of this mess.

dude auburn had a much easier schedule than usc and oklahoma, and no one better start saying it just becuase no one cares about the sec which is complete bs becuase everyone likes the sec, and the reason auburn didnt go is becuase they didnt beat anyone by a good amount, they didnt even beat the citadel by as much as they should haveComment

Do you know what those numbers mean? It's not as simple as you think. In fact its downright confusing really. So I understand what your trying to say. Plus its the third of four criterias for ranking in BCS. Almost no effect at all really. But its not what you think it is.... you got plenty of math to do there according to thier complicated formula.Originally posted by professor_chaosAccording to the end of the year SOS it looks like this:

OU 19

And interestingly enough the computer counts them equaly. no matter what the opponent plays or what it does. It counts that win the same! Or loss the same. Yet everyone else looks at who it was you lost too and who they beat.Comment

I think Cal should be playing for a title. I think Utah got jipped big time by having to face Pittsburg. It should be Cal vs Utah in the Fiesta, and I think the OU vs USC game will be great. Both teams are great and unfortunatly in this system, teams get screwed (USC last year for example). To defend the condoms, they didn't have a great game against UCLA. Rivalries bring out the best of the underdogs and this is one of those cases. USC had nothing to prove to UCLA and the bruins called them on it and should have won it.
On a side note: I'm very upset that Urban Meyer *former UofU coach* is heading to Florida. Then again it's a whole other system outside of the Mountain West and I would jump to if a company x4 my pay.Sorry, I'm oldComment

That SOS is slightly skewed in my opinion.
The way Auburn's schedule played out, they played atleast 4 or 5 very good teams, but besides those teams they didn't play anyone remotely good.
In my opinion that shouldn't matter. It's not the 6-5 team thats going to knock off USC or OU, is the 10-1 or 9-2 teams. Auburn played 3 of them, with UT twice. In my opinion knocking off the big teams is and playing it easy after that, is a much bigger deal than beating #30-#50 ranked teams all year.
SEC is a very competitive conference, and the reason it might appear weak is because we beat each other.
It's not even the SOS that gave auburn the shaft. Its the preseason polls. USC and OU never had to prove themselves, they were their all year. Why you ask? Because they are USC and OU of course! Auburn? Doubted all year. Why? Pssh why not?
Get rid of the polls until atleast 3 or 4 games, maybe even 5. Lets see how the teams actually PLAY before we rank them.
Heaven forbid we get a 8 team playoff.
BCS has driven teams to disregard class. OU runs the score up like a I've never seen. Auburn? Downs the ball on UT's 10 at the end of the game. Class gentleman, whats happened to it? Play the game and hope people can see who the best team is.

I guess you've never watch a Steve Spurrier (sp) game when he was at Florida. People grip about running up the score but I've seen alot of times where a team would kinda slack off and end up almost getting beat, i.e. Colorado vs Nebraska a few weeks ago. I can think of maybe once where OU might have ran up the score. You can't say they did it against Colorado, they took out their starters 2-3 min. into the 4th.Originally posted by DemobilizedBCS has driven teams to disregard class. I agree with you that there does need to be an 8 team playoff. I don't know why people think it would carry to far over to next year. Bring back strength of schedule, leave out MOV (seeing this is where running up the score gets you more style points), don't come out with preseason polls just wait till 3-5 games into the season, and either find a way for everyone to play conf championships or no one play them. Now, this is what i dont understand ppl saying it would take to long to do a playoff, what are we doing right now? We have to wait a freaking month for the NC game.
Take the top eight teams in the country determined by both human and computer polls and lets start a playoff this next week. If you think thats to soon then you could take out the bye week already built into each teams schedule and use it here. So the playoffs would end around the same time as the current NC game. Atleast this way there is a clear champion and it will make 90% of the fans happy. It may seem like a stupid theory I think it would work. O and yes I am OU biased if you couldnt tell.Comment

I was just using OU as an example, I'm sure their are plenty of other teams that do it.
I just find it sad that teams have to do that nowadays and can't just let a win, be a win.Comment
-
Yea, it seems teams have to do it b/c alot of the rankings rely on human polls and many voters dont watch the games just look at scores.Comment

I have been an Alabama fan all my life, and can not argue with any Auburn fan on how they don't deserve to go. They have truly earned the right to play in the National Championship, and this is a perfect example of why we need a playoff season. Sure the BCS is the most accurate available, but at the same time it always seems to cause a huge fuss in the end. They have playoffs in every other sport, including all levels(pros, high school, little league, etc....), so why not college football. Thats just my 2 cents.

Amen to this. Auburn should definitely be going. Ha, so just for some humor, I went to the SEC championship (ahh, had box seats...sooo nice
) and there were a few people handing out these cards to everybody... its pretty funny.
