You won't have to worry much about salmonella if you keep a big bottle of hand sanitizer nearby, and make sure to sanitize the parts of the cage you might come in contact with every so often (the top screen, etc)

19 years....
It was 19 years ago I got a 3 inch red-eared slider turtle. Cute, yes but, 19 years!!! they usually grow a big as the tanks there in. mines in a 30 gallon tank. now about 6 inches long. spends most of the time out of the tank and wanders the house, sleeping in slippers and eating cat food. funny pet, has escaped the house, fell 20 ft off a porch and keeps on keeping on...he's a trooper. think about it.
