    Review: Xbox Mouse/Keyboard Adapter

Just recently, I ordered the mouse/keyboard adapter for the Xbox:

I just recieved it the other day. Hooked it up without any problems. It recognized my keyboard and my old microsoft mouse, both PS2 plugs. I inserted Halo 2 and began to configure the controls.

Programming keyboard commands are easy. Initially, the keyboard has a default key/controller map that's pre-programmed. However, if the "A" key is programmed to be the "A" button on the controller and you'd want to make "S" the new key...just Press and hold ESC, press A, and then press S...release. Simple!

Mouse sensitivity can also be tweaked even further by adjusting the "deadzone". This can be done by Press/holding the ESC key and pressing 0-9 on the keyboard. You can make mouse movements more or less responsive.

The device also has pre-programmed settings for various games like Halo 2, Unreal Championship, etc. Configuration can be changed by simply pressing the function keys F1-F8. You can also save over those pre-defined controls which makes switching games just that much easier without having to worry about re-programming your controls all over again.

Played a bit of Halo 2 both single and multiplayer. I swear, it made me feel like I was playing on my PC. It's how any FPS game should be played. Circle strafing has never been so easy on a console game.

Get it if you're serious about your games...or be just another number on my "Kill" stats.

Ohh!!! I saw a review for this on Gamespy... Reviewer felt that it was "close" to the traditional WASD/mouse setup, but not perfect.

    How much did you pay?
God....I guess I was probably returning videotapes.

I think for everything(product and shipping)...close to $29? Not a bad price to pay since I detest playing FPS games on a controller.

Actually, I would agree to the "close" feeling. My only gripe was, I couldn't map walking forward on my right mouse button. Yes...I know...I'm weird. But that's how I learned way back when Quake first came out. For those old school FPS players...remember Reptile from Postals/Death Row? He was the one that introduced me to Quake when I worked with him many years ago.

So my only adjustment with this adapter is that I have to learn how to play the WASD way...actually...more like ESDF.

        Foward on the mouse? WTF?
WASD for foward, back, and sides-step
        Ctrl for duck
        Shift for jump
Space for primary fire or some special skill
        R for reload
        Q for special skill
E to open doors and things
Mouse for primary and secondary fire or grenades
        Basically the HL setup

Thats how I learned to play many years ago it was definatly a big change from using the arrows in duke nukem. Anyone else remember that game, best fps before hl

Actually...weird and different, but I've found forward on the right mouse button to be quite responsive. How so? Well, my strafe and backwards movements are mapped to my SDF keys...D being back. With my mouse button to move me forward, there's very little effort or lag time between moving my finger up or down to move forward or back. It's basically a release and push without any finger movement on either hand what's so ever. But then again, it's just how I got used to it and found it to be the best for me.

I used arrow keys up until Call of Duty

I used to play so much Nukem I could never get off the arrow keys.

                    Congrats!

You have now given yourself an unfair advantage against all of those who play XBox Live. Cool, huh?

Console games use controllers. Computers use either, really.

Let's try and keep the playing field level by using a controller like everyone else.

Have fun with your unfair advantage. Most likely you will too, except for when you're shot by a talented sniper and have an experience level of 1 in Halo 2.

Unfair advantage? How is that an unfair advantage?
It's not unfair if someone can just go out and buy one. It is an advantage.

Now an unfair advantage would be something like hacking.

Lol, because he decided to spend 30 bucks because controllers are retarded for FPS.

I tried playing GHTP on xbox, I couldn't do anything because of the stupid joysticks, put me in halflife 2 on a computer and I can throw toilets at peoples faces with twitch-like reactions. Essentially they'll start shooting me, I can pull a 180 and blast it in their face. Lots of fun, I plan to record some video soon

Uh...sure. Unfair advantage would be me keeping this to myself and trying to keep this as low key as possible. Hey, if you want to play with a controller, go right ahead. It's all preference you know. I'm not stopping you.

If the controls of the game hinders my ability to play to my full potential(online or not)...then there's definitely room for improvement. For me, I started playing FPS games on a PC and have become very fond of the mouse/keyboard controls. If I can get that same control scheme on my Xbox and enjoy my playing experience online and on single player...then that's a win situation. If I am going to hassle with control issues and feel like I'm missing out on a great game because I'm more frustrated dealing with the difficulty of the controls rather than the difficulties of the game...well, there's just something wrong with that. Don't you think?

But cool...I'm open for debates! I love em!

I don't like this product, a fantastic thing about XBL is that everyone is using the same stuff (short of internet connection, but in these modern days that barely matters), the controller is like a universal handicap. This also makes it easier for gamers who arn't already awesome at games to get into online play.

I hope MS don't allow it on XBL.
