Whats a good (free) video editing program?

All I want to do is turn up the contrast on some video files I have. My monitor has the brightness and contrast maxed out, and when I adjust the software brightness it doesnt change the movie files, just everything around the movie...

Very basic, very simple, but it will more than get the job done. It's fun to mess around with, you can actually do some neat stuff if you're willing to spend a little time.

(Extremely quick and easy to adjust brightness/contrast like you said you wanted to do.)
