Some towns, cities, county require police to wear vests but I don't think any would stop you from wearing one if you wanted.

Unless the pOlice (long "O" sound) is some small town, po-dunk department they should be requiring you to wear it. Mine does. Also, if an employer in my state requires you to wear a certain uniform they have to pay for it. Mine does.

No matter the circs, every LEO should be wearing their vests.

The vest I wear daily is 48lbs of Kevlar, ceramic/steel laminate armor, and ammo...and it will stop bullets and frag.

Will it really stop me? hehehe.

I've always wanted to ask a police officer because I am really grateful for the service they provide. Are you ever worried someone would aim for your head? Or below the vest ?
I dont know much about how bullets fly so I dont know about these things. :)

haha thanks guys. I dont have that much money though so I need to take a cheaper route I think. Ill find something though. Ebay is a good friend of mine.

I saw a vest at a local army surplus store for like $350 (cnd)
If you looking for a cheaper alternative i'd check there.
but ah... it may well be worth the investment.....

Well he sorta does for a PD but... not as a Officer. He is too young. He is just 18 now so he can not be sworn. Must be 21 to do that.

He is working full time now (40hrs a week) in Dispatch for the County Sheriffs Dept and also doing ride a longs as well with the Clemson City Police Dept in his spare time. Also works booking and dispatch for the Clemson Cops temp basis as needed when he is off. Cannot carry a gun at this age and cannot be full time Officer.

He wants one but at this point would need to provide it himself. Not part of required equipment in the job he has.

They go bad after a while, anything you get there is probably going to be significantly deteriorated. When your life is on the line spend the extra money.

These are extra police vests, you can get them from really cheap to as much as you wanna spend...

If he does ride-alongs, they should really be giving him a vest. A local "ride along" had to assist a wounded officer during a shoot out. The officer had been shot in the arm, and the ride along had to draw the officer's sidearm and put it in his good hand. If he is in a position where he could potentially be exposed to danger, they really need to give him armor. They should have at least a few backup vests for the department, or maybe a few that just expired. Something is better than nothing.

As for booking, they need vests, but usually of the type worn by corrections officers. Normal bulletproof vests cant handle knives too well, as they penetrate the weave. The corrections vests limit penetration.
