    Couple of Mac related questions

My sister has this Powerbook G4, and holy crap is it sweet. I've always hated Mac's for no apparent reason, but I can't deny it's sweetness. Anyway, up in Brooklyn, where she lives, she has DSL but then when she comes down for summer and winter she wants to use my dial-up but we've never been able to figure ouit how to get it to work. Now, I've got AOL and a normal dial-up(isp.com) account, and we always try the latter because I'm afraid AOL will screw up her DSL settings or something.

Basically, I need to know how to set-up a dial-up account on a Mac.

Also, how would I go about seeing if it had Wi-Fi built in? She want's to try wardriving/warwalking but again, I'm retarded when it comes to Macs.

    wardriving

The mac is a very good choice for a system when it comes to wardriving/walking. hopefully she has an older tiBook with 802.11b(regular airport card). If she has airport extreme, (you can find out by running a program called "system profiler") then some of the stuff you can do is a limited. I recommend kismac and etherpeek(pay) or ethereal/ettercap(free, but harder to set up). Of, course google to find out as much as you can about packet sniffing, reinjecting, flooding, wep, wap, and all that fun stuff. Visit www.undergroundmac.com/forums/ for more. There are some guys there that are very knowledgeable about this kind of stuff.

So good luck with that, I can tell you that it's challenging and lots of fun.

As for setting up a dial up connection, go into the network pane in system preferences and in the "show" bar, click internal modem. You should be able to get it going from there.

I know that cphil and kevmaster have a few macs, so maybe they'd be able to help you out some more with dial up.

OK, thanks man. I knew about Kismac(seen it on TSS awhile back).

I think it's only like 8-10 months old, I'll see if I can find the System Profiler thing to check on the wi-fi.

OPEN network pane of System Preferences

        Click Internal Modem

        Configure number, username, and password

        Click Save password

        PPP Options

-Connect automatically when needed (I use this, optional)With her DSL, I'd say no
-Click redial if busy - set up times
        -Ok

You can also put a status item up at the menu bar

Click Modem in the Network pane of system prefs(you didn't exit did you?)
At the bottom click "Show modem status in menu bar"

Go back to PPP tab - Dial now

Now, when you want to connect, she can do so at the top menu bar. Never needs to mess with this stuff again!

BTW, it's all also in the system help.....

OR, in the PPP part of the Internal Modem in NETWORK pane of System preferences, just click "Assist me" for an intuitive wizard. That's by far the easiest. Then, just tick the menu bar status in the Modem pane. Done. Dialed. Connected.

        To see her Airport card:

Looks like you already got the help here you needed.... Easiest set up for a dial up of any computer I ever set up. It should go right to work.

If its got an airport card built in or even stuck in it will go out and find any available WiFi network and ask you if you want to join it. They pretty good about that.

I am using a G4 notebook right now. Connected through my WiFi set up at home. Specs:

set up a new location in the network preferences and none of her old settings get dinked with

i run a DHCP connection at work and ping either a modem or a wireless link at home

              all in the same location

the Mac figures out the ethernet connection is offline and seemlessly grabs the other methods

Never buy before a MacWorld! You never know when Steve might "surprise" you with a new speed bump.

Dont worry. I will post a picture of the new station when its all there. I am hoping to break 2TB in space and 4GB of RAM will be the min.

Except for its lack of internal drive space. I miss that. My old G4 tower here can fit 7 HDs inside. I'll be stuck at 2 internal drives and 1 DVD-R drice on this new machine..... it's unlikely but you never know when apple might decide to fix that little deal..... perhaps MacWorld :)
