SO I just ordered $420 in computer parts

    BFG GeForce 6600 GT OC
    Enermax 460w PSU
    Dual Layer DVD+/-RW
    Few other misc things

    Last week I got a Asus K8V SE Deluxe, Athlon 64 3000+, 512mb Corsair XMS4000, 120gb Seagate SATA hard drive and for christmas I got a Lian-Li PC-61.

I think all together it's cost about a grand. Hopefully it'll be well worth it. Eventually I'm gonna thrown in another 521mb or mabey another gig of ram, and mabey water cooling at some point. For now, I think I'll do the basic most though(some kind of window but not a basic square, lights, etc). And I REALLY need to work on my "wire management." My wiring would put a rat's nest to shame.

On a completley unrelated note, I just noticed this was my 2,500th post. Yay for me.

In the world of computer electronics, it's "worth it" for about 2 weeks... then something new comes out.

I upgrade often, and instead get cheaper stuff. I've learned not to get the latest and greatest - it's a horrible investment. Nowadays, the expensive stuff is not significantly better than the cheaper stuff, except on paper. I've thrown out $400+ video cards and all sorts of things many times - because they became worthless. A $100 part lets me upgrade 4 times for the price of a $400 part. And that 3rd purchase, roughly, will be better than the original $400 part.

I couldn't tell you what video card I am using - I don't care. But I remember that it cost me about $65, and it works fine for the games I play.

I look at it the other way. I am currently using a $500 Dell, with mem upgrade, HD upgrade and new CD-R/W and I have been using it for 2 years now.

So in total, I have a 1800mhz Pent. 2 GB Ram, 20 and 250GB HD, Sony CD-R/W, ATI video (given to me by a co-worker so I can run Dual monitors), Stock Dell (Case, PS, and fans), stock video and sound. And it serves me well. I think total I have less than $800 invested into it and it has been over 2 years now.

BTW: No, I don't play games.

Everything I got is a step or two back from top of the line. I was thinking of gatting a 6800nu but I decided ot get a 6600gt and a better psu. As long as I can play Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 comfortably I'll be happy.

Yea, the life of computer components is usually shortlived... Its too bad I got into the AMD crowd so late, because the Athlon XP has already lost support and the 64 is where its at now. So I think this summer I'll pick up an Abit athlon 64 mobo, a 64 3200+ and an Ati X800 XT, after the next iteration of vid cards releases in the spring its price should drop pretty low.

Maybe someone can PM me why my sig was tampered
with when my image is below 20 kb and was 350x159.(20435 bytes/1024 bytes per kb = 19.96 kb.)

been giving it some thought, might be cheaper to buy two "cheaper" cards than one baller card. Dunno, I use my laptop for full time gamining..

I disagree to some extent. I dont buy the latest and greatest, I buy the products that are deemed to be more stable. If those products are more expensive then so be it. A worthy investment in my book.

I didn't say anything about buying a POS - but something inexpensive... there's good stuff to be had.

Personally, I think SLi is a waste of money that could be spent on better ram or a faster cpu..

Tests have already been done, SLi is a waste of money and shows no significant performance increase in gaming. Anandtech did a comparison of the new Asus board.

Yeah, for the time being, SLI is just a novelty.....as it was 10 years ago. Heck, some games don't even support or recognize SLI.

I give it 3 or 4 more gen. before SLI really becomes worth it.....and even then it will be like the difference between a stock video card and a overclocked video card with good cooling.

I'm glad to see you opted for a good power supply. A good PSU can be the difference between a decent running system and a fantastic system because despite all the other factors, a good system is just an expensive box of parts without proper power.

I'd say use whatever extra money you have for watercooling. I know it might sound like an mod for people with too much money and not enough sense, but honestly, it's one of the best things I've done for my computer. Go with good quality components (aka....buy Danger Den parts) and you will be able to take your computer to insane levels.

Also, cosmetically, don't go overboard. Computers are one area where less is more. A pair of good cathodes, some cable sleeving, and good wire management,(and if you are H20 cooling, some water dye) can be done for less the $30 and you will have a nice beautiful computer.

BTW, just my personal opinion here but the odd shaped windows are overrated. Go with a good square one and it will be nice,

Oh yeah, nice case. Not quite a PC-V1000, but still hot
                          BLOODY MURDER!

I guess there is no need to justify your opinion? Ill search, I just read an article a few days ago on hard about sli and I didnt see the "its a giant waste of money." statement anywhere in thier article.
