Sometimes I wonder about the way AO mods interperate things ...

Im just wondering the following, and maybe a mod can give me an answer on this ...

So recently a user was banned for making a reference to LotR where it was interperated that he was talking about marijuana but doing it by quoting pipe weed.

Then a thread gets shut down because a user talks about mod chips for his PS2, I am assuming this is because its "illegal" to use backups. Again a person who owns a disc is allowed to make a backup, but anyone could tell this person was talking about playing copied games.

So where am I going with this? Simple those threads were closed because they discussed illegal topics .... however on this page a thread in which a person asks advice on radar/laser detectors is allowed to continue. Why? There is no purpose for a detector other then breaking the law and speeding. I dont think I know anyone who has bought one so they can find a cop and thank them for the work they do ....

Just amazing that some threads that discuss illegal topics are shutdown, but other things illegal are allowed to continue ...

Oh well my .02 ... probably get banned for venting them, but this is only AO ... not like my life is over if I cant visit here.

Radar detectors are not illegal in most states.

Im not debating owning one ... I am debating the reason for owning one, which is to get away with speeding which is illegal. Owning a mod chip is not illegal, but the main reason for owning one is ...

      edit ... actually here is what I found about legality of using one;

District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) - (1995 law, still effective 2003) - RADAR-detectors are illegal.

Illinois - (2002 law) - Not regulated in passenger vehicles, but they are illegal used in commercial motor vehicles over 26,001 pounds (which is redundant legislation, since Federal law already makes that illegal in any U.S. state for vehicles over TEN-thousand pounds, anyway; BUT, some states like to have it in their lawbooks so that they can charge added fines and penalties that would go to the state).

New York - (2002 law) - For motor vehicles over 18,000lbs, and any other commercial vehicle over 10,000lbs, RADAR-detectors are illegal. [This is already covered by Federal law, as well.]

Virginia - (2002 law) - Use is illegal.

Yeah I know ... but I tend to believe that what is enforced for one person should be equally enforced for all users. Hence my complaint when Rogue went around the language filter and no mods said anything till I raised the issued.

Mods want to enforce the rules, I am all for this ... but I will do what I can to help them make sure its enforced equally for all ... last I checked AO wasnt a popularity contest.

It's based around what's accepted. Speeding [obviously within reason] is accepted. Pirating games and smoking weed are generally not accepted.

Pirating games and smoking weed amongst the lower age groups (21 and under) is actually widely accepted.

Whereas speeding is accepted by everyone as a whole (+- 5 or 10 of the speed limit)

                Yeah, I'm under 21, I know

But how many of the mods are sub-21?

Sometimes AO Mods wonder about why they volunteer to babysit an increasingly whiny group

You can't compare discussing smoking pot (that's what my gen. called it) and coping copyrighted software with radar detectors. Although you found a few states that outlaw them, they are legal in many states. Now, if the discussion was about how to get around the laws banning radar detectors in states that outlaw them it would be a sifferent story...

You know... where I live, prostitution is legal in certain areas and is regulated by the state. With this in mind, I wouldn't lock a thread about your adventures at a whore house so long as it stayed clean.

Now, the other mods may be a different situation - and you can easily see how there could be some inconsistencies.

Unless of course, said thread had G-14 Classified Information about Miscue and said whore house

In this instance, Cue just might have to *thread delete*
