I have seen them for 600 new..........not too bad for a pistol that can NOT be ballistically fingerprinted...........

          SHOOT THEM FIRST!!!! RENT THEM!!!!

That is the most important thing. I shot 11 different guns in 4 different calibers before I decided.

Any 1911 in .45 is a great gun, you can get a sub-compact (3.5") or a commander (4") and it would be a very suitable concealed gun.

I have XD's in both the black, and Bi-tone finishes, and neither is a very rust resistant weapon. They require attention and very good protective cleaner/lubes. If rust resistance is a big concern, id get a Sig or 1911. I love my XD's and they are my choice for competition and carry, but I chose to accept the finish issues. either way, shoot as many guns as you can and get what feels best to you. Good Luck.

This is truly GREAT advice. Everyone raves about their particular pistol preference, but if it doesn't fit YOU, it makes no difference.

a 1911 would also be a good choice........but they tend to have a heavy recoil......or atleast all the ones I have shot.

also, get one with a double stack mag........ 7 just aint enough........14 is much better

7 in 45 is more than enough
                    . for a cary gun i recomend a Browning BDM ( 9mm)
for a defense gun, full framed 1911

my dad owns a BDM and they are great pistols. reliable, small and can accept hi caps.

I figure that plain 9mm hollow point ammo is less likely to over penetrate and therefore safer in most situations.
actually, the .45 would penetrate less.

I was reading some article where some PD tested penetration with their different guns, and the 9mm penetrated the best............even better then the .223. Seems the .223 was going fast enough to fragment, but the 9mm didn't ***ment and just went through walls.

9mm and .40 both penetrate better then .45 .......... hte .45 just has the knockdown power because of te weight.....

I went with .40 for its stopping power. Feels more like the 9mm but has the weight to drop someone especially when pared with hollow points 1000 FPS with 180 Grains is gonna ruin someones day in a hurry. Paired with mag safe rounds youre looking at 2100 fps thats going to gragment upon impact dispersing a ton of energy into someone.

thats what I am looking at right now, havoc....
Most likely I will buy a XD in .40 or .45 GAP when that is released.......or a USP compact........

about the ballistic fingerprinting..........HK's have polygonal(sp) barrels, which makes it almost impossible to "fingerprint". The only thing that can be fingerprinted is the brass from the firing pin striking it.
