    What's wrong with my Xbox?

my brother and i just got an Xbox this past weekend to fill the empty shelf under our PS2. We went to EBgames, and we got the last one in the STORE. bad thing is, its used. even worse thing is, it is used and it BROKE, but they fixed it and it was 'fine' according to them, one guy even played it the morning of the night we bought it.

so we, being impatient and not wanting to wait at all, got the last one in the store, the used one. My brother got a new copy of HALO 2 and i got a used copy of KOTOR (i wanna play the first one before i play the second one). HALO 2 works fine and its a blast.

but KOTOR isnt that simple. now the night we get it i take it home and it freezes non-stop. It was freezing every few seconds and it actually froze while loading and shut my game off. On that note, i returned it. I returned it and i got another used copy of the game, but being smart i got a guarantee so that if that used copy broke, i would get a brand new one for free. The second copy works fine for an hour, then craps out and starts freezing. i take it back and i get a brand new copy. i even see the guy go to the shelf, pop open a factory-sealed case and give me the brand new game. When i take it back home to play it, i get the same freezing. I take it out and put it back in, and it freezes at the load screen. after staring at the load screen for 5 minutes, i take it out, turn off the xbox, and put it back in. i even cleaned the perfect condition game. Then, it works fine! and hour later it starts freezing again when i enter a different place. i just tried playing it and while the freezing doesnt make it not playable, it sucks. the spoken dialogue comes 15 seconds after i see the subtitles, and it takes 5 minutes to load from place to place. and i cant tell whats going on in combat AT ALL.

can someone tell me what's wrong with my Xbox? i think i need a new one. maybe KOTOR is a DVD and HALO is a CD, and my Xbox cant read DVDs? i dont want to have to go through returning it, because chances are they dont have new ones in yet. is there anything i can do on my own?

As far as I know, ALL Xbox games(mabey not older ones) are DVDs. Inculding Halo 2.

Your problem: You bought it used, and from EB of all places. You'd be better testing your luck for a used one on eBay or something.

yea you should really never get anything form EB, espically used things. I hate that place, most of the guys are pricks and their prices are too high. EB

Ironically my used system has lasted longer then my buddies new one .... and around here they are cheaper on used games then Gamestop (AKA Babbages, AKA Software ETC, AKA Borders/B-Dalton).

I have no complaints with EB myself and for the past several years have only bought used systems / games and have had no problems at all.

When did you buy it? Most of the stores will have some kind of exchange policy for like a week or so if you didnt go for the extended warranty.

KOTOR is notorious for DRE's on older xboxs, I got lucky with mine because I have a second generation xbox and had a minor amount of problems.

Maybe someone can PM me why my sig was tampered
with when my image is below 20 kb and was 350x159.(20435 bytes/1024 bytes per kb = 19.96 kb.)

Its obviously not the game. You should take back the xbox. I have an old school xbox and it craps out once in a while on Halo2 and Fable. It craps out on Halo 2 in the intro sequence and some of the cut scenes very rarely but enough to bug me. Fable craps out whenever I spend to much time shopping at a merchant. I just started having these problems. Since you have taken back your game numerous times its the xbox. I think you are having a similar problem, where it only messes up on certain games. Take it back while you still have a chance. Bring the game and show them if they give you problems and tell them this is your (3rd?) copy of it.

I agree with the suggestion to clean the DVD drive. Best Buy/Wal-mart/Target/ anyone w/ an electronics section should have a DVD/CD-ROM cleaning kit - I'd recommend a brush-styloe one, or something without a cleaning solution.

As for it being a Thompson DVD drive... yeah possibly. I think I have a v1.2/1.3 w/ the stock Thompson, but I haven't had any problems. I hear of some people "tweaking" the DVD's laser to read a broader array of discs. Check out this link for more info.

After (3) KOTOR games, its hard to believe that none of them work completely, but Halo2 works flawless... H2 does still work right?

I would try to do the following:
                  1. Try to return the xbox for an exchange or refund
                  2. Go get a DVD cleaning kit
                  3. Visit www.xbox-scene.com or forums.xbox-scene.com for info and assistance.

                  Good luck.
