I will avoid the obvious dig about auto's It is the concept that you can pass in an auto and go a drive a manual with no extra training that I find scary. To be fair the majority of manuals are going to 4x4 or similar rather than a Lamby but many Japanese pocket rockets are manual so it must happen. Clutch control takes a while to get used to from slipping backwards to bouncing along the road (never done that myself although I have selected the wrong gear more than once )

the most common manuals around here are japanese cars and compacts ( caviliers, neons ect) i personaly drive an old e28 BMW, manual, and am very good at it, if i can blow my own horn for a second. but since most cars in america are autos why should the majority have to meet standards of the minority? shoulda all people have to learn on a manual? no. should people have to pass an aditional test to get a license to drive a manual? i couldnt care less, but i imagine it couldnt hurt.

I went to my driving class for drivers ed and my instructor taught me how the fishtale and do donuts. Also he taught me how to do a fast reversed turn, that one was scary.

but I learned and got a perfect on the driving test. so if you need a getaway driver...

When I took drivers ed last year, we had simulators. They were basically like a car racing game like in an arcade. We would always do like donuts and stuff, try stuff from 2 fast to furious. Much fun...

i wish i could have had that behind the wheel kinda driving instructor. i just had a 7 hour drive which included lombard street(curvyest road in the world) and china town, and he let me play with the turbo button, i didn't know what it was at first cuz it wasn't labeled. but all of a sudden i was goin 85 in a 45 zone . all he did was insult asians, try to explain to me that doing an ollie on a skateboard is physically impossible and that they have glue on their shoes, and scream in spanish on his cell phone.
during a bathroom break down by the san francisco harbor, i was outside and these tourists asked me what kind of a plane that this boat propeller on display was from. lol
i can do a fast reversed turn on my friends gas golf cart. hella fun. until the throttle got stuck in all the way and got jammed and i couldn't pull it out, and the key is stuck in the on position. so yeah, he tried to grab the wheel cuz he is a , and crashed us into a tree.

You kind of answered yourself there...safety is the answer for the additional training. But I do understand what you mean about majority etc. As you are well aware you have more control in a manual. Some people just have trouble with thinking about 3 pedals, a stick and being aware of what is going on around them. Only one vehicle I have owned long term was an auto...a baby 2.8ltr. The rest were all manual ranging from basic to silly power back to basic....plus I used to drive baby trucks 7.5 tonnes. At one time I worked for a BMW dealership and part of my duties involved having to get the tax discs from the next major town (we have a seperate disc where as america uses a sticker on the plate) so I had free choice of the fleet cars....so I drove all the models they had in stock..since this was few years ago the most sporty one I got my hands on was 535si sport...manual of course and I power slid it along a road after I hit a mud smear left after some road construction...had it been an auto I might not be typing this. We did have a few other cars that got part exchanged such as a horrible Corvette convertable, various turbo charged cars and a Barrabus equipped Mercedes that was worse than the Corvette as it cornered like boat in a storm but that is a Mercedes trait.
The worst BMW was a 635csl...but then the dealership was forced to take one as BMW were clearing all the stock and all main dealers had to take at least one each. It was noisy, uncomfortable and slow...for pure luxury we had a 750il that I quite liked but since it belonged to the owner of the dealership I didn't get to use it that often....the Z1 was fun but getting in and out wasn't so much fun.

18 days for me Stupid DMV not being open on mondays. For some reason a required thing in Illinois is knowing how to park up and down on hills the proper way. Which is pretty ironic, since last time I checked, Illinois is flat as hell. In drivers ed practicing that stuff, we went to the same hill every time because we could only find one acceptable one. My friends have said they just ask which way to turn the wheels.

I did my drivers test in a manual and have only owned a manual so I cant drive automatics right, i always try to shift them and press their invisible clucthes.

I had a friend from England who was studying at my school and we went out for food and I drove and he was telling me everyone in england essentially drives tiny compact cars, speed limits are lower, and he called I 80 a "death race" ....he also said my 3000 GT was a boat.

He wants a supercharged Ford Lightning, he said no one in England would have one.

The idea of a supercharged truck with 20 inch rims meant for street racing amazed him,

The speed limits here are not lower they are actually higher...we can do 70 on our freeways...yes the roads are narrow compared to the US but the city/town speed limits are basically the same we both have some roads where the limit is silly slow but the scary one is that if you have a sign that says national speed limit it means you can do 60 on a twisting narrow country road...this increases to 70 if the road has two lanes..unless there is a speed sign saying other wise. None of our road systems are laid out on a grid system so we have bends..I know there are some parts of the US that are similar to this but in general they are not...lots of nice 90* junctions not 90* bends which we get in the country often the only warning is a set of sargent (sp) stripes telling you that the bend is severe but no clue to how serve and this is on those country roads that have the 60 speed limit. If you learnt in manual you have to forget you have a left leg when you drive an auto...the only time I have found this awkward is an emergency stop certainly not for regular driving. Normal cars in the US are like boats to people from the UK as to us the suspension does seem soft.

The one part of driving in the US that is totally different to here is that on a freeway the traffic joining the freeway has the right to come straight on...in the UK the traffic on the freeway (motorway/A road) has the right of way...this caused me some trouble driving once...oh and another is the postioning of traffic lights...in the UK they are on the same side as where you stop, often as well as on the other side of the junction...I was driving in a snow storm in Canada (but the same applies in the us) I saw the red light and stopped...but I found I had stopped in the middle of the junction as I had stopped under the light...never done this since. I do like the idea of turning on a red light but in the UK red means stop everytime.

Depends on where you are, California, Arizona Utah, Nevada and alot of western states have 70 and 75 mph speed limits. The east coast on average has lower speed limits as it is the lame part of the country. I live on the I 80 corridor. when I go to the University if you are going 70 people are honking at you to speed up. You have to merge onto the freeway at 80-85 otherwise you'll have problems. This gets worse the closer to SF you get.I routinely drive 90-95 and have for the past 4 years for school with no problems.

Turning on red is great! You can race traffic coming fromthe other way.
