Originally posted by cphilipI have heard these figures before. But never seen any of them proven in any way. I had that argument that its cheaper to keep someone in for life than it is to pay for appeals of the death penalty used before. I seriously doubt its 2 million. But to date... no one has been able to prove any of those figures. I am not saying they are true or false. Just cannot tag onto them until I see it...Comment

Anyway.
It's been brought up by spantol, and I think hes right. Prison polices itself to an extent. Rapists and child molesters tend to have none-too-pleasant stays in prison, as other inmates don't take kindly to this sort of thing. Even murderers have mothers, and most people like kids.
I say let prison take care of them, it's probably a better punishment than we could inflict (legally) anyway.

Very interesting read. But.... the 2 million figure is sort of taken out of context to the whole conclusion in there. Here is what it realy says...
One conclusion is that the extra costs to the North Carolina public of adjudicating a case capitally through to execution, as compared with a noncapital adjudication that results in conviction for first degree murder and a 20-year prison term, is about $329 thousand, substantially more than the savings in prison costs, which we estimate to be $166 thousand. We note that a complete account must also include the extra costs of cases that were adjudicated capitally but did not result in the execution of the defendant. All told, the extra cost per death penalty imposed is over a quarter million dollars, and per execution exceeds $2 million.
So what they are realy saying is the cost of each prosecuion is still more for a death penalty case. By about double. Its just that if you apply those total to who really ends up executed you can get that figure up to 2 million. But in fact each prosecution and appeals process is almost twice the cost of going for a 20 year murder sentence. No compairison for life sentence in that study. And then if you take all the costs of each attempt to obtain a exicution and apply it to the ones actually end up executed you can extrapolate a 2 million figure. Plus they mention that the value to the public of the potential for death to deter is not measuable.
But still. It is cheaper to house for life I suspect than to deliver the death penalty. It might not be quite as much as it seems though.Comment

i can't wait till my little sis gets home. i'll be like - "your a** is covered!" lol
anyway, i'll like to see how much this sorta crime goes down. but this is only for GA, so is a child is abducted, and they drive to FL/AL/SC and do the "dirty deed" i'm not sure if that would still be covered under GA's law.Hard work never killed anybody...but why take a chance?

maybe they should just lock the child molester in a room with the little kids father, older brother, uncle, WHOEVER, and give them a bat or billy club or something and let em just have at it.
becuase personally if that happened to somebody really close to me ide KILL them. prison or no prison they'de need the whole police station to pull me off and even though I have a screw loose here and there im sure most people are the same way.

All studies have shown that a child rapist can not be reformed. They can be tought how to deal with their attraction to children (it makes my stomach turn just typing about it) but they can never be reformed. In all states the death penalty is reserved for the worst types of murders. In other words, only certain murders will constitute the death penalty. I think this would have to apply to child sodomy as well...
Ive worked cases where a father, family friend, moms new boyfriend, whatever talks the kid into doing whatever type of sexual act he can think of. Iv also worked a case (fortunatly it is a case not some cases) where a step father raped an infant child to death, the kid would stop crying. We charged him with capital murder and he is currently waiting sentencing (I dont see him getting out of the death penalty, it is Texas). At any rate, if the child would have survived I would still support the death penalty for him, regardles of cost to execute him.
I have seen and done some studies on the costs to keep someone in jail and executing them. Some things that are included in the costs are lawer fees, costs to pay the prison guards etc...Yes it is expensive but lawers are going to get theirs one way or another, most are working pro bono or are court appointed.
just my two cents...not worth much more than thatFight or flight, I cant flyComment

It is a big misconception that child molestors are treated more harshly in prison...well, let me rephrase that. Child molestors are protected by the prison staff when they are in jail or prison. They are mandated to keep them safe. Therefore they are segregated from the rest of the population.
I think that this proposed law is wonderful and needs to be applied nationwide. If you can catch the "gentlemen" (susbsituted curse word) who do these things, sodomy can be medically proven pretty easily. The problem is catching them.
However, I also believe it should be applied to all child molestors and rapists. Period, end of story. The victim of these crimes don't ever heal and have life long emotional problems. Sort of a death sentence of their own."Don't hit at all if you can help it; don't hit a man if you can possibly avoid it; but if you do hit him, put him to sleep."

If you look back in history there have been times when much lesser crimes have been given harsher punishments. It wasnt that long ago that stealing a horse was punishable by death. That being said the ultra harsh punishments didnt affect the crime rates... I'm not really for or against this bit of legislation especially since in dont live in Ga but I dont think it will change much of anything if passed... Maybe just where taxpayers money is spent... Dont get me wrong the crime does deserve harsh punishment... just not sure if this change in legislation would be an effective use of time or resources...You can go a long way with a smile. You can go a lot farther with a smile and a gun.
