I haven't subscribed to that site. The fact that there was some disagreement indicates that it was a close call. I'll have to do some more research, but I stand by my argument that political considerations were an important factor in the decisions.

I like the 3 engine deal, though that is really of more benefit for long missions. The presidential fleet is more of a taxi service. I didn't notice anything else that really stuck out.

I think it would scare you guys if you knew how much of your "American" airplanes,
including military, are put together using parts from countries outside of the US.
that now includes a huge number of parts from China.

Canadian companies for example are certified to bid on and make parts
for both civil and military airplanes, with almost equal access as US companies
                  to contracts.

Pfft, just sit Bush in an Apache. That way they won't really have to worry about attackers. Not with a few 114k's and Sidewinders.

EDIT: ^^ Isn't the C7A2 based off the M16A2, an American made rifle?

So what if parts are made out of country. Its cheaper, and sometimes other countries have better resources to make a better project. As long as the end product has the stars and bars on it, I'm content.

Anyways, the EH101 is 100% a European design. Its the first time since the Eisenhower administration that the president has used anything other than a Sikorsky. My theory is that the US was kissing up to Great Britain and Italy, since they are the sources for major components for the US101. I know we use Belgian machine guns, are getting German rifles, used German cannons for the M1s, etc etc. However, this is the helicopter used by the President of the United States. Are we going to buy an Airbus for the next Airforce One?
What is god's name are you talking about?

The first helo Eisenhower flew in was a Bell UH-13-J, flying from Camp David back to the Whitehouse. That was on July 12, 1957. IT wasn't until 1/1/58 that HMX-1 and the Exec Flight Detachment started using the Sikorsky CH-34-C.

For the first few years of the 70's the Sikorsky's were replaced with the Bell UH-1-N.

And we are not using "German" cannons for the M1. Sure, the cannons might have been designed by Rheinmetall by the cannons are still all 100% American made by General Dynamics Land Systems Division in their plant in Lima, Ohio.

The one thing I truly love is the new M1028. Basically, it's a 120 mm anti-personnel canister cartridge. It was brought into service early for use in the 2003 occupation of Iraq. It contains 1150 10 mm tungsten shot projectiles which spread from the muzzle to produce a shotgun effect lethal out to 500m. The tungsten balls can be used to clear enemy dismounts, break up hasty ambush sites in urban areas, clear defiles, stop infantry attacks and counter-attacks, and support friendly infantry assaults by providing cover-by-fire.

For once, a tank can be used for anti-infantry roles.

True but unless you get them all to line up you're gonna have to make a few passes. Now, with just the swivel of the turret you can lay down a fairly impressive field of death and realy shread those infantry goons down!

Ooops, late night boo boo. I meant to say US designed chopper. Good call. And again, I just would have preferred to see the President in a US designed bird.

As for the cannon, I did mean that it was designed in Germany, just as the 105 was based on a British design. Note also that I made mention of the Minimi (249) and the G36 (XM8 or whatever), designed in Europe but in use (or will be in use), and built, in the US.

I have yet to see any footage of the 1028 in action, but it sounds awesome. I did, however, get to hear how the tankers used sabot rounds against infantry. Apparently, during some nasty urban combat in the original invasion, some M1s were sent to deal with Iraqi forces holed up on either side of the street. An M1 shot a sabot round down the street, and the vacuum it created literally sucked the guys from the doorways onto the street. The M1s then ran over/machine gunned the whole lot of em. Nasty.
