Now I hear that if they are installed from the factory, they are ok but actually not DOT approved and illegal if they are aftermarket. Just a thought.

Yeah, I know. HIDs are a factory option though, so I shouldn't have any trouble convincing someone they're stock, and therefore legal.

Unless they don't have a DOT stamp on the lens. My fogs aren't DOT legal b/c they don't have it. The inspection lady was nice about it b/c at the time, they weren't plugged in. But next inspection, they are gonna fail me b/c of it.

Install them correctly, I've seen tons of cars with them added on and they didn't bother to align the lights so they blind everyone else. On more than one ocassion i've seriously considered following them home and taking care of the lights for them.

Forgive my lack of HID knowledge. Is 5k the color temp or the output/brightness?

4500k I believe is almost white
                    5000k is a little blue
                    6000k is deeper blue
7000k is on the purple side
                    9000k is deep purple

                    I think

That's about right. 5000k was described to me as white with a hint of blue, and that sounded good to me.

bofh, the 'k' stands for kelvin, iirc, not 1000.

I'd say 5000k is optimal.... higher than that looks pretentious, IMO.
