rifle stock

Hey all,

I figure I'd show off my new little project

This morning I started to make my own stock for my Marlin .17HMR rimfire rifle...

I used two pieces of Pine which I laminated together, planed them into a 2.5" block and for a good 4 hours this morning, I used a plunge router to duplicate the action/ reciever slot...

I then ate lunch, and being the nerd that I am, I returned to my shop and kept working...

So far I've got the shape of the stock cut out, the action fitted, and the rifle fits in place without any form of shimming ( )...

anybody else do something like this without the proper tooling? (I'm just winging it with the basic woodworking tools that I have)

My dad got a MArlin .17HMR a few months ago. It's pretty fun to shoot. I shot a pumpkin with it and it put a hole about the size of a dime in both sides, and even left some of the jacketing sticking out the back side. I'd love to see what it'll do to a squirrel's head though

Yea, but .17HMR travel at insane velocities and go alot farther.

my farthest kill is at 184 yards

its sighted in for 100 yds, and the bullet starts to drop around 160ish...

no exaggeration... heres a scan of one of my targets (5 shot group @100yds):

Wow thats really cool! I can respect skills like this. I wouldn't know the first thing about how to make a rifle stock, I'd just tell my dad to do it.

well I needed a breather from all the dust... so I figure I'd post an update...

I couldnt wait untill tomorrow to start shaping it so I had to bust out the rotozip with mad angle grinder attachment...

I've now been working on this for almost 8 hours today

everything in my shop is officially covered in atleast 1/8" of sawdust ... but the rear portion of the stock is pretty much to its final rough shape

I can vouch for that target. I was at the range with him when he shot that group, or a group just like it.

I'm also wondering how the pine is going to hold up..I don't know much about stocks or wood too much but isn't pine fairly soft compared to maple and other woods?

The main concern should be warping. Pine might get dinged up easier, but that won't affect accuracy.

Looks great so far, are you planning to bed the action?
