    It's labelled as a 4gb drive, but it probably has some used for system and whatnot.

      Every hard drive loses some space. You can't use 100% of the drive's capacity.

      Also there are two ways to measure HD space. HD manufacturers use one way, which leads to inflated sizes. If you look on your computer, your HD isn't as big as advertised. A 120GB HD may only be 118GB or some such.

      And also your iPod has software and whatnot built into it that takes up some space.

        A 'real' GB is 1024 megabytes. However, Apple/everybody else lists a GB as 1000 megabytes. Computers use the real measurement, and that's where the discrepancy comes in.

            1kb = 2^10 or 1,024 bytes
            1mb = 2^20 or 1,048,576 bytes
            1gb = 2^30 or 1,073,741,824 bytes.

            Now marketing gets ahold of these numbers and says, "wow, that's confusing, let's call 1mb 1,000,000 bytes. That's way easier to remember, and it makes our 3.725gb hard drive sound like it's 4gb. 4 is better than 3, right?".

            And thus everyone that owns a harddrive of some sort gets pissed when then realize they were basically lied to about the capacity of their drive/iPod/computer/whatever.

            There is also some minor formatting and filesystem overhead for any drive. That's minor compared to the whole 1gb != 2^30 thing.

            BTW for those not into computer logic, "!=" is "not equal".

              because its either on or off, 1 or 0.
