Canadains I ask for your GUIDANCE!

So me and 8 of my friends have decided to rent this very nice house in Montreal, Canada for senior week June 18th - June 26th. Now I know that Quebec is the most french-canadian part of Canada I just want to know is it just rumor that the locals treat american tourists like crap or are they actually nice. Also if you could tell me something about Montreal and what to do there that'd be nice.

Maybe you shouldn't say things like that.

I went to Quebec city and Montreal, and have been in almost all the other provinces, on average I'd say they're less friendly there than in other provinces, and I'm french-canadian.

Say thins like "vive la Quebec libre!"

Montreal is a lovely city, and the population is fairly bilingual (though few of the signs are). There is more English in the West Island than other parts, though that is pretty suburban. As for friendliness, I've never had a problem. Though I can say the same for NYC, despite it's reputation.

There is a lot to see and do, and the Metro makes it easy to get around. I'm presuming that you aren't really interested in the Biodome, botanical gardens, Comedy museum, or the Oratoire St Joseph.

Old Montreal is worth a visit. Downtown means Rue Ste Catherine, with bars and clubs clustered on the cross streets of Rue Crescent & Rue St Denis. Rue St Laurent is where the city gets really French. Stay West of that.

You can get a pretty good synopsis here:

The drinking age in Montreal is 18. If you're planning on hitting "the ballet" at all, I highly recommend Chez Paris

Every time I've gone to Canada, which is quite often as I have a lot of relatives in Quebec and Ontario, everyone has been nothing but polite.

All the locals I ran into in Quebec city (not counting my family) was extremely polite, friendly, and helpful. All the shopkeepers were great, if someone tries to talk to you in french and you don't understand they don't cause a fuss or yell at you. Someone will usually translate if its important.

And Montreal is less French than Quebec city, in my experience. Hell, I even stopped off in Drummondville, POQ, which is VERY French-Canadian, a lot of the locals don't speak a word of English. We stopped for lunch at some tiny cafe and the people there were great. We didn't speak French and they didn't speak English but we managed to order lunch.

Like a lot of places, if you are friendly and nice, it'll come back to you. If you go around making stupid jokes and being rude, then you'll get harassed.

Quoted for the truth.. I travel to these places often.. Like 10 times a year actually.. Very fun place.. Thordic said if you act nice it will come back. It is true. Don't let rumors or other peoples stories screw your decision up just go and have fun !

Montreal is better than anywhere else in Quebec, you should be okay.
