4/5 gig per month of disk space? or bandwith?

how is it 1000 a month if that is bandwith? I have seen hosts that are 85 gigs of transfer and 5 or so gigs of disk space for 40-50 if i am not mistaken.

I know vbulletin costs some, but what else am I missing?

I'd say that PBN and AO probably use upwards of 3 terabytes of monthly traffic. That would be about 3000 gigs of traffic a month.

Everytime someone loads a page that takes away bandwidth, people browse between pages like no tomorrow. Few K here, few K there, you'd be amazed how much each person when viewing a popular forum site uses per day in bandwidth.

No, AO is paid for by AGD currently.

I believe AO is hosted on just one server. The most bandwidth your gonna get out of one server is about 3 tb per month. 3tb is about the maximun you can transfer on a 100 full duplex lan connection if it was transferring data at max 24/7 for a month. Most places call this magic number "unlimited bandwidth" but there is nothing unlimited about bandwidth. Disk space is mad cheap and dos not become important till you need multiple hard drives.

AO can not run on a shared server so either it it a colocated server or a dedicated server. Dedicated means they just lease the hardware and colocated means they bought their own server and put it in someone's data center. Im leaning toward the dedicated as it far cheaper to have the server on a 100 full duplex lan connection.

1- unix dedicated server on 100mb full duplex with ide disks is about $150 per month. This is about the cheapest you will ever find.

Now all you have is a server and the hosting place is responsible for taking care of the hardware since its a dedicated server. Well what about systems administration & webmaster dudties?

You need a unix/linux systems administrator to patch the server, apply security patches/fixes DAILY, intrusion detection DAILY, capacity and a bunch of other stuff. This could easily cost hundreds a month for a site like AO.

Now you need a webmaster/database guy bcause AO runs Vbulletin on MyDQL, Apache and PHP. He not only installs and upgrades the software when needed but also tweeks the database and writes webpages when necessary. This could cost hundreds per month also.

The $1000 assumption is an easy price to get to and one I would agree with. Keeping the 3tb assumption in mind anything over $1500/month is too much money and AO should look to change it.

AO has only been down a couple of time in the last couple of years since Ive been a member which means they have paid good money for their services.

I run Jayloo.com on 3 of these servers but I am the webmaster/ database guy and systems administrator so I only pay for the servers and work my butt off daily. I offered to host AO because I could just put it on my least used server ( the non video hostiing one) and back it up with with one of the other 2 servers in case of a server meltdown.

I tried to give just enough info here to answer the question felony asked. I would be more than happy to give further geek and non-geek info if needed.

Hits per day is not a measurement of a sites traffic. For example one web page with only test on it is one hit, one picture included in a page is one hit. A page that displays 5 images is 6 hits (1 for the html page and 5 for the pics) Some pages on a sites cause a hundred hits.

Instead concentrate on page wiews per month, unique visitors per month and bandwidth transferred. This gives you a much better understanding of a site business but I doubt anyone would be willing to just openly share those numbers because they tell soooooooo much.

The server is owned by Tom I do beleive.

Also, what about dual full-duplex Gigabit? That is what my leased server is running.

I believe your referencing paintballmedia.com. If I am correct you and I both use the same hosting company and are likely using the same server setups and plans (depending when you got your server). Our servers may even be in the same room together.

Gigabit connection would give about 33tb of transfer per month. It is unlikely that any one server under $1000 per month would have such a connection. If so I need more information.
