    Question about opening router ports

It was a sad day when we got our current router last year, a Linksys Wireless-G (WRT54G), because immediatly afterwards I was unable to play one of my favorite internet games, Age Of Empires 2: Conquerors. I later found out this was a commom problem with these routers, and it was because it closed some ports that had previously been open. I found out that the ports were:

    Port Forwarding-
    6073-6073-UDP-100
    2300-2400-UDP/TCP-100
    28000-29100-UDP-100
    47624-47624-TCP-100

    DirectX8-6073-6073/2300-2400
    DirectX7-47624-47624/2300-2400

See, the problem is that I am pretty much computer/internet illiterate, and I have no idea how to open those ports, especially the DirectX ones. I don't even know what version of DirectX I'm running. I found out how to open/close ports in the router, by typing this ip looking address in the address bar and hitting enter, but I have absolutely no idea what the password/username is. I don't even know if my dad had it or kept it. Who could I email to find out?

    Any help is appreciated.

the username should be blank and the password is "admin" (lowercase no quotes)

Also is that going through MSN gaming? if so try this: http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/...i=&p_topview=1

I know my Linksys has some games/programs built right into the router software.. Rather than the port, you select what you are playing and boom -- it's working.

port forwarding is easy, just read up a little on what is happening in the background, and when it makes sense, read one of the millions of guides online about how to do it. I bet there are at least 40 guides written specifically for your router.

Also just thank your lucky stars that you didn't buy a D-Link wireless router like I have, it is truely something awful. First of all it was unuable out of the box, i had to go back and forth between my house and a university computer room to get help and download firmware patches and the like. The thing finally started accepting some goddamned internet and I thought my troubles were over. HO HO HO, not for me, I had to wait another month for a new firmware version JUST so that I could press OK on the Port forwarding and NOT get an arbitrary error. Now things work ok, the router stays up long enough to be useful, but If I check right now, the router reports it's uptime as:
        Code:
        System Uptime 429468079 hour(s) 429496724
Fantastic! My router has been serving internets in this house for over 50,625 years! Finally, I have realised that clicking on the 'Advanced' menu button in the http interface (This I need to click to change port forwarding options, wireless security options and other important stuff) causes the entire thing to crash, meaning I have to run downstairs and reset the thing!

        DO NOT BUY A D-LINK DSL-G604T

Also the wireless PCI card that came with it works about 200 times better if you force it to use US-Robotics drivers, rather than the ones supplied by D-Link! SCORE!

            Username: admin
            Password: 1234

I think that is the Linksys default. If not, take a look at the "Quick Start" instructions that came with the router.

I have a Linksys router and my username is admin, password is admin..works everytime unless someone has messed with your router settings and changed it.

Here is what it should look like in IE:

And once you log in, click the "Advanced" tab at the top, and then click Port Forwarding..and it will look like this:
