Silly Brits -- pop culture ?

    Alright Yanks,

I recently was chatting with friend from across the pond. He used the expression "Soon enough, everyone is playing Chinese Whispering."

Super e-cool points to whomever guesses what he was referring to.
God....I guess I was probably returning videotapes.

Chinese whispering is like the telephone game right? Where there are a bunch of people in a line and the first person whispers something to the next person and by the time it's made it's way around the room, it bears no resemblace whatsoever to the original whisper.

        Is that it?

          +100 for Mr. Eeerrriiiccccc CCaaarrtttmmannnn!!!!

The aforementioned Brit was none other than Mark. We were discussing how rumors, and half-truths spread so rapidly across various message boards. He said the "Pretty soon, its nothing but kids playing Chinese Whispering." and I was just, like, WTF

I thought it was pretty funny.

            My life is fulfilled now.

Actually my mother is from England and my father's from Ireland, so I tend to pick up on a lot of expressions from that area.

I kept away from the thread as asked by Ricker, but then he should have rejected Canadians from answering since they would know the game from the english heritage they have. But even the thread has become Chinese Whispers since the quote from me isn't accurate and is changed twice in the same thread by the same person
                  I actually sent the following
"when I have posted a similar indepth post it gets speed read and details are missed and the thread becomes like chinese whispers (I assume you know that game).

My explination of what Chinese Whispers was "Chinese Whispers is a line of people where the first in line is told a sentence and then they have to whisper it to the next inline and so on...by the time it gets to the end of the line the message is far from original and very often 180* from it too. So the analogy used in people reading what they want to think they have read is how it applys."

But since we are doing possible cultural differences here is one for you..Brits (Bolter ) and Canadians can't play...what is Block?

I once read a list of Brit slang for going to the bathroom. Some made no sense, others were hilarious. My fav, "release the chocolate hostages."

Things like that are often made up in very recent times and so can't be called slang. A good example is we have a show on TV called Brookside and it is set around the Liverpool area...in the show they refer to Christmas as "Crimbo"...I lived in that area and never was that term used it is purely a TV show invention, same applies to Eastenders (I know this is on BBC America) the people in the eastend do not go around saying "sorted" all the time.
Different areas use different terms to others but some are made up to fill out lists like you read. Even the question I have asked about Block is a different answer (actually a different name) in other parts of the country...so do you have any idea about what Block is?

I was just about to point that out, and that he heard it wrong.

Hmmm does it really matter what the brit's are saying? Just as long as they are talking I am content.
