simple question about computers (cuz im stoopid)

    how many kilobytes/sec would 12 megabits/sec be? not 12 megabytes/sec, 12 megabits/sec.

12 mbs being the transfer speed of usb 1.1

edit- the reason for the question is that im getting an ipod, but my crappy ibm laptop doesnt have usb 2.0... and i wanted to know how fast it transfers songs through usb 1.1.

    1 kilobyte = 0.0078125 megabits

.09375 megabits a sec. If google was right bout how many megabits are in a kilobyte

          Easy

You guys are making this too hard - there are 8 bits in a byte. So the equation would be:
12000000 divided by 8 = the number of bytes per sec

so 1500000bytes per sec, or 1500KBs or 1.5MegBs

and remember that is the theoretical max, not always indicative of real world performance.

While it's true that there are eight bits in a byte, converting transfer rates is not necessarily as simple as multiplying or dividing by a factor of eight. You can easily end up with ten bits of bandwidth required to transfer a single byte of data.

Using a factor of eight, we get the following:

            12 Mb / second = 1.5 MB / second

There are 1024 kB in one MB, so we get

            1.5 MB / second = 1536 kB / second

Using a factor of ten for our bits to bytes conversion, we end up with 1229 kB / second

As stated before, all this is theoretical maximums. Expect lower transfer rates than this, especially if you have more than one item chained together on your USB.

yep.... 8 bits in a byte.

                12mBITS/sec = 1.5 mBYTES/sec

                1.5 Mbytes/sec = 1500 Kbytes/sec

Go download the latest edition of iTunes from Apple and begin converting to id3v2 (v2.2+) tags and cataloging your music NOW. You DO NOT want to retag and edit MP3::Info over a USB 1.1 cable.

done... put my entire collection on last night. too bad itunes blows... it wouldnt recognize half of my cds. or maybe its this 4 year old ibm laptop. either way, i just used WMP to import my songs (to mp3, 320kbs), and it created the tags for me no problem. then i just put them into itunes.
