Really, this is always a decision you have to make for yourself. That said, a bottom-end purchase will likely turn you off from whatever it is you are trying.

Re: vodka or rum, rum tends to have a stronger flavour. Vodka is almost flavourless, at least when mixed. This tends to lead a lot of people to drink too much of it, too fast. if you choose that, be careful of how much you drink (2nd hand advice: vodka & OJ tastes the same coming up as going down).

Honestly, if you are not much of a drinker, stick with beer.

i wouldnt step right off into realy hard liqour man. rum and vodka are both STRONG drinks. if yo want something with a little bite, try some jack. its personal preference, but dont take whole shots before you know what your drinking...........

i would highly recommend buying a cas of smirnof ice's or something a little less........powerful. the first thing i ever had to drink was a shot of kim beam.....i projectile vomited across the room.....

hmmm speaking of i think im gonna go find my jack daniels bottle..

That's true. I could put a nice downpayment on a house with all the money I've spent on alcohol. And I'd have fewer scars. But I could say the same about paintball.

He's right, But!! If you've already made up your mind, I'd go with the high end stuff. Your not going to drink an entire bottle, so why not get something that tastes good. Besides, it's your birthday, you gotta splurge. Check out captain morgan's private stock. I love that stuff. Don't waste your money on smirnoff vodka, go for the grey goose. There are a ton of good whiskeys out there too. I recently made the switch from cheap liquor to good liquor. I don't drink as much, so I went with the more expensive. It's definetly worth it.

I know its pretty unrealistic to convince someone to not start drinking. But let me explain my thinking. I also know that some people use it to loosen themselves up and to just have a good time.

If you never drink, you will never regret it. If you do, you will have an occasion where you will. If you never drink, you can't become an alcoholic. If you never drink, you can't get a dwi. If you never drink, you can't kill anyone while driving drunk. If you never drink, your liver won't fail due to alcohol. If you never drink, you can't accidently have a shotgun discharge and kill someone. ie. Jason Williams. If you never drink you won't kill yourself doing something you wouldn't normally do while sober. If you never drink, you will have some extra coin in your pocket.

Realize it is much easier for me to say no. I decided when I was a teen. That I would not get drunk. I did have a couple drinks here and there but that was it. I also got to see my Aunt and Uncle split due to alcohol. My Uncle in a car accident from alcohol. My cousin who started with alcohol then moved to drugs then moved to jail. A friend when I was growing up was killed on his motorcycle after a just couple drinks.

How will you know you are addicted to alcohol if you never try it??

More bad than good. Thats my point.

Werd. Course you'll never bring home a skank from the bars, either. Never experience beer goggles. Never get liquid courage. Never play Beirut. Never play Big L's (white russians and smokes when he does). Never be Irish for a day.

CasingBill All sarcasm aside, you do raise strong points about the danger of alchohol abuse. Your context was just a bit harsh.

OP; I'd recommend against Capt Morgan's, Southern Comfort, and other sweet rums, as I find they give the worst hangovers. Vodka, especially premium (or brita'd ) is usually good in terms of liquor hangovers. I'd try some Ketel One, with a few nice fruit juices to mix with (not O.J.).

It's pure preference what grade alcohol you want to buy. The higher end stuff and lower end stuff both get you drunk, but the higher end stuff is a bit nicer to drink. As for myself, I gave up drinking-to-get-drunk a long time ago. I prefer not to voluntarily devolve my mental processes to that of a 4 year old.

I'm aware of the risks, perhaps not as intimately as you are. By no means do I disagree with you on the dangers stemming from DUI accidents, accidental death, and increased proclivity to win a Darwin award.

I choose to drink, and I occasionaly tie one on smartly. Just keep your bros around to keep an eye out for you. To each his own.

SBF: Good post. To elaborate on one point, go to a bar, and try something basic like a gin & tonic or vodka & tonic. Have two and see how you like them. Next time out, try something else, like a Manhattan (good luck, ask CM). You'll find something you like.

As to the brand & image part of SBF's post, this is, IMO, part of the "social game" that is going to a bar. Noone feels cool standing at a crowded bar, not knowing what to order, and just ending up with "Shot of Jack and a Bud." Nothing wrong with that, at the right place, but there are more suave solutions. Personally, whenever I'm ordering at a cocktail function, I'll order a gin and tonic. At a bar, I'll specify what kind of gin; i.e. "I'll have a Sapphire-tonic, please."

Good gin brands are: Bombay Sapphire, Bombay, Tangueray (kinda sketch), and Beefeater
Good vodkas include: Grey Goose ($), Ketel One, Skyy and Absolut.

Also: NEVER order a vodka martini shaken and stirred. Unless you're wearing a three piece Brooks Brothers suit and have a Aston-Martin in the lot.
