My bro decided to buy USP .40

so my bro and i went to the local indoor range here. And shot a small cache of pistols, they rent them out. Anyhow, the selection was: Colt 1911, glock 17, glock 27 (for fun), Ruger .40 forgot what model and a USP .40. they didnt have any Sigs around unfortunately.

Of all of them we both liked the USP, with the 1911 a close second.

I did a little reseach and found the USP is quite the contender. Multiple configurations in the actions, rugged, polygonal barrel, accurate, can handle +P rounds pretty soundly ect.

Futhermore as a 1st time gun owner, can you recomend any safetey courses/combat courses? Granted where we live there is very little to no crime and the oppertunity to use the gun defensively would be a slim to none odds. Shooting competitions would not be out of the question.

Any 1st hand experience with USPs of any caliber model for that matter would be greatly appreciated. Any cool links or wners group would be awesome too. Thnx!

...ever in the continual search of time dilation.

Buy a 1911!! Don't get a cheap 1911...ie Springfield millspec, most colts etc. Save up $1000 and buy a Kimber, or really save up...$2000...and buy a Les Baer Custom 1911. Nicest handgun I've ever shot/owned!!

Les baer supertac w/ 1.5" groups at 50 yds!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now carbon, and what point are you going to dress up in a Counter-Terrorist outfit (i.e. Pball Mask+Skate Helemt+Retarded Vest+Snow Pants) And run around the house with your USP, trying to defuse the bomb hidden in the oven...

My brother has a USP .40 as well, very nice marker...er handgun. =P

I have a ruger .40, would trade for the HK anyday. Only thing we have done to it is add rogue slide on rubber grips. The back of the grip was tearing us up and its unrealistic to wear gloves all the time. They widen the grip slightly, but it actually made the gun fit better for us.

Im sure you know this, but its important enough to be said again and again. For safety, remember to always respect the gun. Everytime you pick it up, treat it as its loaded. Lock back the slide and always check the chamber.

        Have fun!

that reminds me of the video where the dea (?) guy was giving a demonstration to a class, acting completely cocky, said the gun was unloaded, then said something like "I am the only one professional enough in this room to handle a (type of round) gun" and then BAM...he shot himself.

            He missed himself, actually

He kept referring to it as a Glock 40, IIRC.

http://drunkendelight.com/content/videos/03084899.wmv is the video, happened to have that on hand for some random reason.

you sure he missed himself? seems every news article says he shot himself in the leg, was treated at a local miami hospital and released.

The Washington Times delivers breaking news and commentary on the issues that affect the future of our nation.

And I said "check the chamber" specifically because I watched that video yesterday =P

                  Carbon,

My dad shoots a 9mm USP that I bought him a while ago. I liked the multiple action, the way it pointed, and the control access. Hk has a solid reputation for reliability as well.

I've shot USPs in .40 and .45 at a range, and I've come to prefer either 9 or .45, but that's just preference.

They make cool polo shirts as well. Black with red HK on breast, "No Compromise" in small letters underneath.

/Kimbers are really nice. Like slider trigger Evos.
God....I guess I was probably returning videotapes.

Hey, sorry. I was half asleep when I read your thread. I thought you wanted to know which gun you should buy. Anyways....

                    Go here: http://www.awt-co.com/

Call and ask for Walt Marshal. He's the director there, awesome guy. He really knows his stuff and the course is a lot of fun too. I took this class last year: http://www.awt-co.com/Tactical%20Night%20Shoot.htm .

It's worth the money and the drive up to Richmond for it. Good luck.

I also dont like most of the Republik Of Kalifornias Gun laws, but the state does allow and issue CCW permits. Some counties and Cities do not allow this, (Berkely)
but not all. I have had my permit for over 2 years, and the process was very simple. But I also live in a more rural city.

Take a NRA course, like "Basic Pistol". You can probably find these through the NRA's webpage, a local range, or through the California Rifle and Pistol Association.

The USP is a very good pistol. I've fired 2 USPc in .40S&W: a standard DA/SA and a LEM trigger. The LEM was great once I got the hang of it.

My personal .40S&W is a SIGPro, but the USP is still on the list.

Last time I checked, you could buy the handgun, but couldn't buy the ammo (5.7mm).

There's a non-AP cartridge, and therefore available to the general public, out for the 5.7. Hornady makes it and it's around $20 per 50 cartridges.
