Hey AO,
I am probably going to start working on a graduate degree in the near future. My new job offers tuition re-imbursement, so I figure there's no better time than the present.
I am considering getting either an MBA or a JD (law). My goals are to increase my toolset, improve critical thinking, and of course, add to my marketability as an employee.
Background: Undergrad work at USC. BS in Business Administration, emphasis Global Marketing. Minor, International Policy & Management. 3.2 GPA, athletics.
Pro: Now at arge marketing agency. Account role. Current client is large credit organization, and I'm working almost exclusively in Direct Mail. Very specific areas of responsibility. Previous was start-up agency, with a lot broader but non-specific tasks. Mainly a DM house as well.
Now, at first glance, the MBA appears more appropriate. It's sort of an accepted rung in many fields. Night school and Sat classes are much more available.
However, there are a few arguments I raise for the law degree. Mainly, I think it would serve me better. I think I would learn more critical thinking skills, and how to store, access, and use as references vast amounts of material.
Also: in the Bay Area, you may have heard we had some rough job times the past three years... I'm concerned that a lot of unemployed low and mid-level execs went and got an MBA "in between" jobs, and there may be a glut of MBAs in the market it right now.
I don't really think I would want to practice, or even take the Bar. I just think it may be a better degree for me than an MBA.
Opinions, queries, and ribbing all encouraged.
Thanks
Ricker

Cost of living is exactly why we left California. That and the two hour commutes to the City.
