USB devices on linux

im looking to emulate SNES games on my new linux work/beater laptop. I was wondering if I can use a general USB device and get it to work with linux, roif i have to locate a special gamepad.

The LikSang SmartJoy is an inline adapater to convert an SNES game pad to USB:

Personally, I think the best gaming controller out there is the X-Arcade, though admittedly it's overkill if you're looking only at SNES emulation.
