I was watching a show last night on the Firebird. He was instrumental in that car as well. Early on he had developed a car he name the "Banshee" and it actualy looked very nice. Was never prodoced but eventualy some of the lines made it into the Firebird. And was actualy going to be named the Banshee but they changed the name just before production as they were concerned the name might conjure up images of a Mythical creature that screams just before someone dies. However Delorean was able to talk them into performance and that Firebird was the saving grace for Pontiac for that era. The Banshee body could not be used as it was a Two seater and Pontiac wanted a 4 seater performance car to compete with the Mustang. So he had to use the other platform instead of his Banshee. But he intended to use the name but corporate backed out and renamed it at the last minute. Probably one of the best selling Muscle cars competing with and beating (at the time previously leading) Mustang and even the Corvette. His affiliation with the GTO has already been mentioned


Also remember he was indicted and prosecuted for a large drug smuggling operation which he allegedly was using to get his car company back on its financial feet. He probably was deeply involved in it and the evidence showed him negotiating the whole deal but he sucsessfully won aquital of those charges under a "entrapment" defense. Meaning they had set the whole Drug smuggling idea up and presented him with the opportunity to get into it and in his desperation for money he went into it. However you wish to think of him. He did willingly try to make money off of Cocaine smuggling. But was entrapped into the whole scheme to do it.

Just to add the involvement of grants from the English goverment meant that due to his use of these grants for personal gain, he was still liable for arrest had he even returned to English soil. Co-incidently we had a program on TV last month about John Delorean and the formation of the Delorean car company and it covered all the details including the drug sting.
