It has happened in the past. From my understanding however two Ligers are not able to mate and produce fertile offspring (or have not in the past) thus not allowing them to be classified as a true species

Why has Napoleon Dynamite compelled sooo many kids to use the word "liger"? Seriously, it's not new! Ligers have been around for a while, not because of some stupid catch phrase in a stupid movie. It's not funny, OK? NOT FUNNY!
