We're renting our house out for the masters golf tournament and I dont want who ever uses this computer to be messing around with it. How do i remove the recycle bin from the dektop and the all programs button from the start menu?

Maybe make them a seperate user account and password protect yours. That way they can have access to the internet, email , Word, etc, but wont have access to all of your files and stuff.Comment

oops sorry its on a guest account but i dont want them opening anything but firefox and ms office apps.Comment

depending on the operating system you can limit what they can do in windows. Just log in as the admin and set their access privs. Shouldn't be that hard.Comment

This is what I would do to make sure that no one uses your PC:
By doing the following, you will lock out anyone from the Hardware and the system. However, with all things, passwords and security can be bypassed.
1- Lock the Chasis - "All new PC chasis' come with holes to put a lock through it"
2- Boot the PC, Hit F2 (or Whatever Key) to get into the BIOS.
Within the BIOS there is an option for a security password. Set a password that you will remember and then make sure to write it down somewhere. Save the BIOS and exit.
If you do not want to do the above, an you are using a Windows 2K or Windows XP system. Set Passwords for the account that you use, if you are using the Administrator account then set a password for that account. At least this way the person will need a password to get into the system.
If you're paranoid and do not want anyone to mess with your system... Remove the HD and take it with you...
As for the GUEST account, it will be able to open up all programs, and pretty much most of the files except system and user profiles. By doing this, you would need to set access rights to all your programs and that would be a pain.
You could remove all the programs from the listing by using a Global Policy but if a person is computer savvy they could still find it....
As for me, I would not want anyone to use my PC.... If the person needed to use it... I would format and re-install just for them...

thats not fun!
take a screen shot (PrtScn) of your desktop, icons and all, and paste it into paint and save.
now, move all of your icons off screen
set your backround to the paint image and voila!

i would just put a password on my account, then go into the users screen and set the limitations for the guest account, and you can even set passwords against people using your web browser for ex. prOn, email, AIM, etc....anything that could damage your computer from a newb user downloading things, and SET YOUR ANTI VIRUS/SPYWARE PROTECTION!!!....to avoid the hassle of reformatting and the like, hope it helps
-edit..also go into "Set Program Acess and Defaults...from there you can set acessablilty to the above mentioned as well, and for web browser limitations go into "Tools", and internet options within the subcategory..Comment
