I believe it was named after a real life firearm named "Automag" which ive included a link to some pics and info of the varying models below, its called the 'AMT Automag'.

    AMT Original Automag
    AMT Automag III
    AMT Automag IV
    AMT Automag V

Harry Callahan carried, and dispatched baddies with, a Model 24, Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum. In the second to last Dirty Harry movie, "Sudden Impact", "Harry" aqquired an AMT .44 Automag Magnum Pistol (AMP), with which he shot the last bad guy off the top of the roller coaster.
The gun Clint used in the movie was built specifically to fire blanks only.

Harry Sanford designed the guns, which are real BTW, as a rotating bolt, recoil operated, magazine fed, semi-auto pistol. The ammo is nothing more than cut down .308 brass, trimmed to accept .44 caliber bullets

Power level is half again as much as the .44 mag. Yes, I have shot three different Automags, and each one impressed the heck out of me! Recoil is something to write home about, severe to say the least. But Oooooooo! The power, THE POWERRRR!

Here's what it looks like, notice the tubular design, straight grip similarity to OUR beloved Automag?

And even a "Baby Automag" built on a Ruger Standard .22RF:

So Army, does the 44 AMP come in factory loads? Or if you own that particular caliber you'd have to lop off a whole bunch of spent casings and reload them from there? Sounds like too much work for me. I've always been interested in handloads, never gotten into it, though.

Chrome adds around 4 bps to any gun.

The gun hasn't been made since the mid-80's, and even then it was always in limited production.

The first batch of factory ammo was made in Mexico in 1977, and it was HOT stuff, some gun breakage was attributed to these overloads. After being tamed down, the Mexican ammo was the best factory ammo available. Some Remington ammo was made, but not in a complete lot so it is rare.

Nowadays, handloading is your only option. Many shooters are using the 7mm Benchrest to form cases, since it is a short case and minimal forming is required.

I always get a giggle when I watch "Sudden Impact", when he is first shooting the gun out in the woods. He is shooting a piece of angle iron, but the bullets are just zinging off it. The .44 AMP will blast that angle iron into two pieces easy!
