I have an 82 with a the 2.8. First off, the engine is JUNK. It was rebuilt at 60K and then the electronic carb died (no, it's still a carb, not a TBI). It's been sitting in a garage for 8 years now begging for the 350 next to in to be installed. One of these days I will get it back on the road.

As for the gas milage, let me look. I just happen to have my gas log here.

When I parked it on 08/10/97. the car had 73,070 miles and was averaging about 13mpg.

When I got it back around 1/18/92 it had 49,226 miles and was still averaging abut 13mpg.

So for a POS engine with no guts it was not very fuel efficient:)

Maybie their was somthing wrong with the car sucking up gas or you were driving it hard (as hard as you can drive that mini motor anyway)?

My 91 with a 3.1 got 16 mostly around town and I was beating the hell out of it.
My 91 with a 5.0 gets between 9 and 16 around town depending on how I drive and 26 on the highway.

              Try www.thirdgen.org for more information.

                .
And neither of those is a 2.8, which was arguably the worst internal combustion engine ever built by GM. They were gas hogs to boot.

I wouldnt touch that car with a 10' pole.
Black/Red Tribal 2.0 BBT, Morlock board, 90* Angel Space frame, to many goodies to list. SOLD

actually you can't just go off what the factory says it gets. you have to remember its an 83. probably carbureted. you will have to clean the carb. definately look at driveline, inspect for rust. definately do your research. also gas really depends on what you plan on doing with the car. if your gonna try to get some performance out of the beast, buy it. for an everyday driver, i doubt your gonna get the mileage you want. i mean you'd be better off with a frickin 72 VW superbeetle. but im no expert, like every guy on the site, i try to give good advice. but hell i'd tell you how launch a nuke if you asked me.

I've heard people get 20 and up on those v6's.

                      That should be usefull.

Id stay away from the v6 camero as they are not very reliable runners and pretty gutless too boot. About the ONLY good thing bout the 2.8 in the cameros is they pretty easy to work on (witch is even more of a + since ya gona spend alot of time there).

As for the Porshe 944. I would recommend skiping on that one too as inshurnace will KILL you even on a ancient Poor Mans Porche. Trust me i looked into it (almost bought both a 944 and a 928 but inshurance was WAY OUT THERE).

For a cheap commuter you REALLY cant beat a small VW Diesel Golf or Jetta. Ther SUPER reliable, GET AMAZING fuel milage (im averaging 45mpg on my 87 VW Golf Diesel), There not Fast but fun to drive none the less and are simple to work on on the rare ocashion you have too. Also it CHEAP to inshure and the older models are a dime a dozzen.

Heck i bought the VW for the simple run around car to go back and forth to work every day instead of running my F250. The car has already PAID for itself in only three months.

P.S. And the newer VW Diesels can be FAST. Off the lot there VERY peppy but put about $500 into em and thel hang with most of the competition in that class. My bro has an 03 thats dang quick. One day i gona get him to go against my truck at the local drag strip to get some numbers (Yes the car can SMOKE my truck).

Ya, but i want something with balls. My parents say as long as i dont f up in school, i dont get arrested, i dont do drugs(only if they find out :) ), i pay for gas, and i get no tickets, they'll pay my insurance. So i dont really care too much about the insurance cost. (being spoiled ROCKS!)
I've looked at a couple 944's, and i think there awsome, and you guys shot down the camaro, so unless a 67-70 'stang shows up, i think i'm getting the 944.

When GM had a TSB around for awhile that said to repair a "lack of power" in a 2.8 you replaced it with a 3.1 (or was it 3.4) you know they had an issue...
