    Laptop Ideas?

My computer is about to bite the dust and I'm tired of messing with it, so here it goes. I'm looking for a laptop with some power, but not so much that it is expensive. I don't really game that much on it, I just am an impatient person. I'm also looking for something less then $1000, I'm on a limited budget. Anyone have any ideas on what I should be looking at? Should I give more details?

Please don't flame me if this is the 100th thread on this, I couldn't find one when I searched.

If hairball hadn't already beat me to it, I'd post the same link.

You'll be happy with an Ibook. Plus, I take it you are a student? You get a 10% I believe....or $100, one or the other. Can't remember. Eitherway, yeah, I recommend Ibook.

My family has always been MS people, this would be a big first. Would it work on my Linksys Wirless Network? I have seen them with apps like Word on them, how would I go about doing that?

Macs have come a long way. Hooking it up to a Linksys router is just as easy as hooking up a MS machine. Plug ethernet cable in, turn laptop on, enjoy Safari.

As far as word goes....there's Word for mac. Pretty much every major MS application has a Mac port or equivalent. Most of the equivalents are just as good if not better than their MS counterparts. They also recongize the same file types (excel and word files. I even think keynote recongizes powerpoint files).

So short and skinny? Getting an Ibook or Powerbook will be the best thing you ever do. Trust me. I miss my mac toys so much

Oh yeah, and OSX 10.4.x Tiger just came out and if I'm not mistaken, new ibooks purchased from Apple.com/store come with it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

We use macs laptops at school and to quite honest:They stink. We have MS laptops at my house and firefox> safari any day of the week. They are always crashing and it's old. There is always at least 3 broken laptops any time of the day in the computer lab. I'm happy with the Compaq laptop's ( I think were $850-900) we have at the house.

If they are crashing, they probably aren't using OSX. They probably have OS8 or 9

while duke basketball does not officially endorse apple...

we use 12 apple powerbook laptops, 6 dual processor G5s and one XRaid server wiht 15TB of disk space.

we have to know day in and day out we can show our video over these machines and the network. if it were to fail, ONE day, it would be unacceptable. they dont. our players always see the tape. for our critical applications video & scouting we use ONLY apple.

as video coordinator of the duke basketball team, i woulnd't ever use a machine not made by apple.
