AO: We are back from the dead... again! After an 18 day outage, we are finally alive and well. Who knew how complicated updating software/databases from 2008 would be. I still have alot of tweaks to make, but my main goal was getting everything patched and updated to 2026.
Vbulletin 6 has changed alot since 2008 so we will have a ton of new features to dig into.
Yeah, if you truely have your heart set on a PC......go with one of the Compaq Presario R4000 series with the AMD 64-bit processors. Can't beat that as far as PCs go.
Exactly what i was thinking. Its pretty awesome... you can get that with a gig of ram and an Athlon 4000+ (and other good stuff) for $1500, which is a steal, especially for a laptop.

Actually, I am pretty much deciding between that and a 12" iBook g4. I looked at the Cyberpower, but I really want to buy from a more known company. I have nevery heard of Cyberpower.
Cyberpower is used by many AOers around here, Including me. There Solid, you can trust them... Not to mention they warantee there stuff for 1 year standard, also they have online chat, so you dont have to call for help or questions...
If something does go wrong (I know cuz lightning god mine, cuz i wasnt using my surge protectior) They email you a UPS coupon, u print it out bring it to UPS and they ship ur laptop to them for free.
Any questions about CP or the Centrino Laptops (all i know about) IM me at AttackingEcho
Whatever you do, do not get an Apple computer. They suck hard. As soon as you use one, you will hate your desktop PC and drool over the G5s. They completly spoil you. What with the decent security, great stability, ease of use and wonderful interface. They are for suckers that like a computer to work, not just crash all the time. My powerbook completly spoiled me. Now my nice fast PC is pretty much a Counter-Strike only machine. I use the Mac whenever I can, and I'm eyeing those G5s.
A broken security model/implimentation on the internet these days = instability. As much as good hardware will contribute to a stable machine, without a lot of extra effort, windows is simply not a stable platform. Take a few steps to lock down a box, and follow a few security measures (that windows makes unncessarly annoying) and you can have (like I do) a very very stable windows box.
I'm not just a mac fanboy, I'm actully a securty expert, unix geek, photo geek and a network geek. I prefeer OSX over Winders for a number of reasons. I do provide care and feeding for Win2k pro/server, Slackware (Linux), Solaris and Win2k3 ES boxen, so I'm quite familiar with mutiple systems.
There is a reason the multitude of hosts that are compromised on the net are Windoes based. Fire up p0f and watch the incoming smtp floods from hosts and you would be amazed at how many show up as windows.

Wow, su much I don't understand in a single post. My head hurts now.
i'll vouch for macs in terms of reliability and stability...going back to what i said earlier
additionally...web servers. they NEED 100% uptime. they can't have glitches or errors that causae them to go down. they can't have 'blue screen's of death'. what do they run? unix. what is mac's operating system based on? unix. coincidence? nope. unix is the most stable platform out there.
IMHO there are only two reasons why you would want a windows machine:
1) Cost.
2) Some app that only runs on windows
You could also argue that the games support on a Mac is bad (it is), but it's bad on pretty much any laptop. If gaming is not the main purpose of the machine I find that to be unimportant. (I maintain a PC for gaming).
Cost is becoming less of a factor, but Mac are still high priced.
As for apps, unless there is some very specific thing you need on a Windows box, take a good long look at a Mac. MS has office for OSX (and the student copy is cheap). The OS comes with many utilities that you need to buy on a PC. You can get iLife and do a ton with media. A whole load of unix tools will just compile up on a mac without complaint (it is unix afterall).
Considering you can get a GF6800 in a lppy now, gaming is a laptop thing too
I use PC's for a few reasons....
1) faster
2) cheaper
3) I can make it do what I want, harder to fiddle with stuff on a Mac
4) I can build'em myself.
5) I like Yoper, Gentoo, etc over OSX because, again, I can fiddle.
6) gaming - games just dont exists for Macs......atleast not in numbers
7) software compatibility
for security.......internet wise, just dont download crap, and have a firewall.
for system security, there's really no way to have that if someone has access to the system,
I have a windows and bios password.
havn't had a worm since the first major worm a few years ago that knocked out the internet a while back. Granted, thats with windows staying updated with SP2, and Firefox.
